Is it a Cox?

Is it genuine Cox? Probably not although others look similar.

A genuine Roy Cox Champion race car will be identified by lettering cast on the bottom section. Cox also made a lesser series called the "Special" and some of them WERE powered.

If you want more information just ask.

The casting marks may well have been sanded or worn off.

Ha! I didn't even realize that the back of the picture frame I put it on had that sticker.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. The links from crankbndr do look a lot like this car. Superdave, how do I know it's not a Cox?

The other cool thing about it was the taped on note that someone left on it. It fell off while I was handling it, and I have to find it. It was about a 2" piece of paper with the typed words "S.F. Park 6?.??mph" (I can't remember the exact speed it quoted). What stinks is there was no date listed that I can recall.

Because the car doesn't have the typical characteristics of a Cox Champion (letters cast into the bottom section of the car.

Mine reads: "Roy Cox
Thimble Drome
Champion
Santa Ana, Calif."

I received my #96 car as a promotion for selling newspaper subcriptions in the early '50's.

Over time it became a little battered and the cast aluminum accessory parts became broken.

Only recently I cleaned it throughly and replaced with broken parts. The paint and decals are all original and in good condition. I don't consider it "restored" because the paint shows minor scuff marks.

I even posted a picture of my car on CECF. I'll see it I can find it in the "Search" file.
Watch for an "edit" to follow.

edit: The picture is NLA in the "search" file. Sorry, it was posted several years ago

Whoa Dave, you're the only one that said its not real, I'm thinking it just might be? Is it possible it's a earlier version that didn't have a cast-in name on bottom?

There might be, it would be interesting to see.

I'm not a expert on the cars as I've never really studied them, so I'm not 100% positive it is a Thimble-Drome. I know the Nylint repros do have that on bottom. I would suggest you surf a couple car sites and send them a email...if theres no ID on inside.

I would ask of you, if you were in the market for an authentic powered Cox Champion race car would you be interested in the subject car shown? (If it were for sale)

As suggested upthread, I'm of the opinion that it is a Chinese "knock off". I've examined such and, once in your hand, the "fakery" is quite evident.

I value my authentic non-powered Cox Champion in the $350-$500 range. which is confirmed by selling (not asking) prices on "flea bay".

Check "flea bay" and see for yourself.

No, except for the engine manufacturers trade name. From the Cox factory the powered cars came with operating instructions which are probably long gone on yours.

I don't know if it's a knock off or not, but I'm guessing that those were more recent. I don't know how long they've been doing those though. The apparent age of this one and the typewriter printed note that was stuck to it, appear to be pretty old. I've wiped it down since to get back some of the shine. The car is pretty heavy too. Not trying to dupe anyone into buying it, just wanted to know what it is I have. Thanks.
