The Space Bug Jr I recently bought on ebay came without a head gasket. It's the early cylinder with small threads. Does anyone know of a source for these, a substitute, or extra they would be willing to sell?

I'd buy a used head with gasket if that is the only option.

Thanks, Jim

I could be mistaken, but I don't think the small diameter thread head requires a gasket.

I assumed they used the same gasket as post 1956 but could be mistaken.

The instruction manual IPB doesn't show one listed. I also don't have any on mine.

Oops. I did something really stupid. I was scrolling down the page and accidentally hit the +/- bar and registered negative for cribbs74. How do I undo that?

Jim

You can't... The most you can do is just up him one on another post.

Yes, based on the parts diagram it looks as though no head gasket is necessary. The instructions note that compression can be adjusted with gaskets, so they must have been available and used. My Space Bug, also a fairly recent ebay buy, does have a head gasket. Now I'm wondering if I should leave it or remove it.

The Space Bug gasket drops right down over the threads and has cross section (width) that is greater than the current Cox gasket for the large thread head. The current gasket does not drop down over the threads. Its I.D. is slightly smaller than the head thread O.D. It does appear possible to thread it down so it seats. It also appears to have enough cross section to seal. So, I would say Bernie is correct in thinking the current gaskets could be used.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like the 1953 Space Bug did have a head gasket. Here's a picture of a disassembled engine showing the gasket.
