MECOA TD carb housings Empty MECOA TD carb housings

I bought what turned out to be a pretty nice TD 051 which the seller thought had an 049 cylinder. When it arrived I was pleased that it was an all original low time engine. Unfortunately, it had the beginning of a crack right at the top of the carb opening.

I bought one of the MECOA housings. It's slightly shorter in height than the original and has the web on the back. I don't know whether I should just leave the engine as is or use the MECOA part. Were the MECOA style housings ever used by COX or did MECOA just make a new tool and change the design? Seems the web might help, but why shorter??

I am pretty sure Mecoa bought part of the original carburetor body molds (either the tops or bottoms portions) and then made the rest of it themselves. This will probably account for the slight discrepancies you mention. We have used a Mecoa carb body every once in a while and they will work fine. Now, to get them to sell us any.....

What MECOA selling is the carburetor housing of TD05RC, it has web on the back where original TD049 carburetor housing does not have it.
The purpose of web is to fix the muffler at certain position. It also strengthen the structure. no harm using it in 049.

Thanks for the responses. Until I decide to run it I think I'll leave the original housing on.
