Which Thimble Drome Cox Engine Type?
Hi Cox Engine Forum Users,
Got this engine from a friend in order to restore and complete my Graupner Citabria from the early 80ties.
Need to find out what engine type it is for getting correct parts which need to be replaced (glow head, seal, reed valve etc.).
Thanks for your hints, KaiHi

Hi KaiHi,
for me, it looks like a pre 70's Babe Bee with muffler. I have a similar one in my p 40 warhawk. But I can be wrong.
It is funny, that you are restoring a Graupner Citabria too. I have also one, you maybe check my topic.

BTW: If you want a authentic restoration, you should use a black widow with a muffler. That's was Graupner recommended in the manuals. The Original Box also shows a Black widow with muffler, 45° rotated. The engine was not included in the kit.

Re: Which Thimble Drome Cox Engine Type?
The "Thimble Drome" printed on the tank indicates it is in fact a Super Bee, a more powerful version of the Babe Bee. It did come from a Cox P-40 plastic RTF model. The difference is that its cylinder has dual bypass ports for increased fuel flow and more power than a Babe Bee. All Bees of that era share the same internals except the cylinders(which are interchangeable).

I'm pretty sure the lettering on the tank was there on all BBs throughout the 60's.
If it is original to the P-40, (Super Bee) it will have "P-40" stamped in the cylinder port rather than a number and more ports as Rusty said.

Re: Which Thimble Drome Cox Engine Type?
All,
Thanks for checking and for your much appreciate hints and resources. I’ve been able meanwhile to take the engine apart (thanks to the forum hints) since it was sitting for ages.
On the cylinder bottom section I could identify a stamped #2. Furthermore I’ve could only see one bypass port. So I assume it’s an old Babe Bee version. I’m looking forward to get the necessary replacement parts and get it running.
KaiHi
@Coxaddicted: Your Citabria luckily is in way better condition. I will keep on checking your topic.

Kaihi:
Pay special attention to cleaning the venturi and needle which very often are gummed by old castor oil
Remember to properly position the fuel pickup tube either straghtit down or slightly to the left if you intend to fly control line.
Go to the Search file and reference "cleaning" for further tips.

Hi KaiHi !
First of all, Welcome to the Forum !!!!!!
Just a thought as you work to get your engine running: Which ever site you choose, Matt or Bernie's, you might check out their bulk sales for some extra parts, and / or order some of the packages of parts, especially gaskets, reeds, and an extra glowhead or two.
Later !!!!!!!!!!!! Kim
