In an RCG thread titled "Any kits for a Cox .049?", I mentioned using an AXN FloaterJet ARF for a .049. Well, I went ahead and got one to do the .049 conversion. I already have one with the electric motor, but after seeing a few videos on YouTube where some people cut down the wing and made the wingtips removable for better axial rolls, I decided to get another one and do the wing crop. That way I could fly electric or glow on either wing. I just finished it, but won't be able to fly it for a couple of weeks. I modified the fuse for the .049, and the wing kinda like I'd seen done online. I worked up my own system for separating the wing halves and latching them together.

And with the engine mounted. As you can see, it only has about 1/4" of clearance between the prop and the fuse with a 6x3 prop.

The instructions have you glue in the carbon fiber spar, then glue the wing panels to the fuse. I cut the carbon fiber spar in half and used a fiberglass arrow shaft that I had in the junk box to make the wings removable:

I cut the upswept wing tips off to make a 36" wing and glued on some 1/8 balsa, then sanded to shape:

Then I glued in some ply plates to the wing roots and made up thick plastic pieces to latch the wings together when installed.

And finally, I made an exit on the side of the fuse for the antenna, and then taped it down with packing tape so that it looks like it's part of the trim decal, at least from a distance.

When I got back to model airplanes two years ago I was really intrigued by the electric stuff and got a Apprentice 15e to learn RC with. Then as most of us the demanding tug of Glow fuel sound and smell caught hold. I donated all my electric batteries, chargers, aircraft and other support equipment to a local Military kids camp that has a RC training program.
All my current RC stuff is based on .60 and larger engines and aircraft.

Along the way I wanted some 1/2a engines and return to control line family heritage.

I know we will generally loose out to the electric crowd... plug n play, RTF, BNF, ARF, and basically quieter(translation safer) ((of course those who presume electric motors are safer than glow or gas are dead wrong...sharp prop spinning 20,000 rpm does not care when it cuts you how it was spun up))

These notes and photos are wonderful example how to hack back to glow
