hi im looking at using a model plane engine for a project i have in mind and i was wondering if i buy somethign like this a cox 049 engine (was a ebay link for one that was around 30$) what all do i need to make it run? and controll the throttle (not going to be remote controlled) what kind of fuel tank do i have to use? can it be much larger than radio plane size? how long is the average run life of one of these engines? how much power output can i expect to see from them? if i need electronics or somethign for them what would be best way to get them(used or new?) thanks im trying to keep this kind of on a budget thank you!

Here's everything you need in one place, except fuel:
http://coxengines.ca
http://coxengines.ca/basic-engines/

There is also www.exmodelengines.com

Both of those companies are members of this forum.
They sell new engines with throttles already attached, or separately. There are different types of throttles too.
They last for decades if the right break-in procedure and proper fuel is used. I'm using Cox engines I've had since the 1960s. I'd guess the power output is 50-60 watts for the basic .049. They'll turn 12-18,000 rpm depending on your propeller selection.

Fuel can be gotten here. My preference for these engines is the Sig Champion 25% nitromethane:

Welcome to CEF. We can help you muddle through the choices and answer all of your questions. Good luck.

Rusty

AK:

I'd like to refer you to our forum "search file" (on the forum header) because much of what you need to know is found there.  Better to "surf" that for information than to buy haphazardly items that you may find unstuitable for your purpose later.

You are welcome to ask questions here because this forum has probably the finest assembly of Cox authorities in the world.   Thumbs Up
