Bad day flying.... Empty Bad day flying....

Post  Cribbs74 Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:43 pm

I say that, but I was flying so it can't be all that bad. Windy afternoon in Harrah OK, I decided to put up the Ringmaster anyway even though the more experienced were waiting things out. The Ring is pretty hefty at 34oz so I don't get really concerned about the wind. I took the opportunity to practice some level and inverted flight as well as some inside and outside loops as I figured it was too risky to do anything else. All was going well until I decided to do some consecutive outside loops.

I learned something new about wind. You should bias the wind so when you are doing outsides you dive into the wind to slow the plane down. I didn't do this and my second loop went full bore inverted pancake into the grass as the wind took hold of it like a slingshot.  I have never seen a rudder explode into so many pieces! Affraid or WOW! Also ripped the tail off. That plane was grounded for the remainder of the day. The wind calmed about an hour later so I decided to put up the Clown. I found that my inside loops were near impossible to pull out of. With full up and a hard yank I could get it to pull out just barely. I ended up just flying the tank out as I didn't need another wrecked plane.

Once landed I went over to look at the plane as I knew something was wrong as it was acting way nose heavy. This wasn't possible as I have a Fox .25 on the nose and it weighs 1oz less than the .35 I took off.

A quick look at the elevator and I found that the center pin hinge had broke free and along with pushrod flex it was allowing the elevator to lay almost flat when in full up deflection.

I plan on doing some sewn hinges to fix it and using a safety pin as a pushrod guide. So I pretty much played pit boy the rest of the afternoon while everyone else had fun.Laughing

A bad day outside enjoying the weather is better than many other alternatives!

Looks like a relatively easy fix (replace) on the ringmaster.

You got that right Phil. I juat wanted to practice my vertical and overhead eights. I have been doing OH8's in 1/2A and I wanted to do it full screen with the Ringmaster after the wind calmed down.

Oh well, it lives to fly another day.

Here is a video of this afternoon featuring Larry Oakley piddling around. Of course his piddling looks very close to contest flying. Larry is flying a Thunderbird powered by an Enya .45 (6001) if you listen close you will hear the engine never really breaks out of a 4stroke and just muscles through the maneuvers on pure torque. The prop is a wooden Rev Up 11x6EW.

Very impressive to see and hear in person. I want one.

Hi Ron, The "Ring" doesn't look too bad at all. Must have "just caught" the top of the fin... I take it the prop broke? I notice it's not on the plane... My luck would have been a  "broken tail"... with engine still running to make the experience much more dramatic!! Is that a Fox .35 on the Ring?

Wise decision on your part, while flying the "Clown"... That could have been the difference between a "Bad day flying" and a "Horrible day flying"! My heart sank when I saw the post's title... I thought; Oh Oh... something broke...

Larry's T-bird flight vid was very cool. Nice engine-run! What's he using for a tank/muffler?

Thanks Roddie,

Yes Fox .35 on the nose and yes the prop broke. Just bought it too.

Larry runs without muffler and uses a home made chicken hopper tank.

We all dare the wind at some point... something inside us say's "it's not too windy..." My 1st experience was at Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA at a C/L funfly. There was a light breeze...  I flew a Bee powered homemade flapped stunter while flyers were packing up to leave. I must have set a record on running backwards. "What have I done" Shocked  longest 3 minutes of my life! I was applauded when it was over... I wanted to crawl into a hole! Embarassed

One obvious differentiator between R/C flying and C/L is that in the latter you will sooner or later (i.e. once in a lap) get tail wind at a relatively low altitude that may smash your bird into the ground. With an R/C plane once you have taken off in nose wind and are up in the air no matter how strong the wind is, you will manage it thanks to the forgiving altitude you are free to select. And it is true even more so when you have a small 010 or 020 even a 049 powered plane. I always am the last to land and pack up my 049/051 powered R/C flight stuff in the field when storm comes/hits, long after the largeer planes have been already grounded

simply quit flying for the day..but the small planes always land safe in nose wind..never broke or even flipped one..

Oh I won't! I have to be flight ready by the 11th so I can fly during my work trip. I wouldn't say I'm that good of a flier if I was this wouldn't have happened. I'm working on it though as these kinds of things are getting more and more infrquent.

Hey, guys, I've been AWOL today.
I didn't want to open this thread when I read the title. But she looks like she'll be okay, I was relieved to see the wing and fuse all in one piece. Sorry it had to happen though. Knowing that it's always a possibility gives a gritty edge to our kind of fun.

C/L and R/C... no comparison. Not that it's harder or easier to master either one, it's just that C/L is an exercise in total body coordination. I like being physically connected to my plane.

Hey, Kim, take the plunge, it would be great to have a bunch of us all learning together!

Gritty edge, I like that....

Some bad news though, the LE is broke. It did a twist, tug, pull test on the wing and sure enough the ultracote is doing a little buckle right at the LE near the sheeting.

I'll work from underneath and see what's up.

A little Dremmel saw action and a plywood biscuit will set it straight if it is a cracked LE.

Hopefully Phil,

To be honest I am surprised this wing has held up this long. It's around 60yrs old and the balsa is very dry and brittle. I pancaked it in NM and broke 4 ribs. It was a quick fix, could have been weakened and when I did the inverted pancake it broke it through. You can see it clear as day through the ultracote.

I despise cutting into wings.

Ready to go again.

I used hard balsa to recut the rudder and horizontal stab. Hopefully it will hold up a little better. My other rudder was broken in 14 pieces.
