Need Norvel engine help
Well, I went back to cleaning my desk again. And, again, I got sidetracked. I have these two Norvel engines. Both came from LMH helicopters. They both have the thrust washer for the LMH heli clutch, and both are threaded for 5-40 bolts. My question is about the numbers on the side. One engine is numbered 6100166 and the other is 7122014. Does this mean that the first engine is a .061 Vmax6 engine and the second one is a .074 Vmax7 engine? I don't know why the one on the right has a long tube on the venturi and the other has a short tube, unless LMH decided later on that the longer tube got cooler, cleaner air somehow by moving the suction point away from the crutch?
The only other markings are on the other side on the upper cylinder area. The one with the number 6100166 has 1.0BEP written on it:
The one with the number 7122014 has unclear writing. It looks like 1.0BP-PY maybe?
Any ideas what these numbers mean? I'd ask this on the Norvel forum, but no one has posted to that forum in months.
Also, I was just curious. Has anyone ever ran a Norvel engine with .049 glow head? I'd imagine the compression drops, and therefore the speed. But, it should run okay, yes? Just a stray thought.

I don't know much about the helicopters, but both engines are .061 in size (from the marking on the left side) so they would both have been in/for the Vmax6, I would assume.
The heads are the same for the .049 and .061 engines.

So the 1.0 BEP somehow equates to 1cc displacement?

Yes, the numbers 1.0 stands for 1cc aka 0.061 cubic inch...

Re: Need Norvel engine help
Bernie's clamp ring heads and drop-in plugs are the same compression ratio as stock Norvel heads.

Re: Need Norvel engine help
I run them very successfully with a head adapter cut for Nelson plugs, 4 head shims to start and get first few runs on the engine then play with shims and nitro to get high RPM consistent runs (IN THE AIR)
(actually my first one I tried Rusty's way with a low compression Cox head, then back to factory head, and then to the Galbreath Nelson adapter)
I do not waste time with the muffler
I do adapt a Cox fine thread NVA as per Ken Cook and Rusty on this site
I do run bladder
very cost effective engine for me as the Cyclon and Fora are expensive and hard to get
