O.S. 40 & 46 LA C/L
O.S. 40 & 46 LA C/L
As mentioned before (quite a few times!) - I have been snapping up O.S. engines really cheaply both new and "used". Maybe someone knows something I don't but if, as Ken posted. the LAs are being discontinued I would have thought that they would still hold a reasonable price unless they are being replaced with something better and cheaper - even then - why take the loss now. £11 for a 40 LA C/l "used" and £36 for a brand new 46 LA C/L - don't understand!
Anyway, what I like about them is that the 40s and 46s can easily be converted from RC to CL.
The way the venturies mount offers flexibilty in choice. Remote NVA or front mounted NVA. The choke is easy to replicate and experiment with as well as swapping NVAs.
While they may not be the lightest or most powerful - they are bargains.
The blue ones do look a bit of a mess when scuffed but that is easily remedied. I suppose they limit the choice of aeroplane colour unlike the silver ones. I am plotting a colour change on a couple.

Hmmm... I've been watching on and off for a while, and those engines haven't come cheap over on this side of the pond. Maybe I just don't look on the right days, but the ones I see aren't that much cheaper than new.

Re: O.S. 40 & 46 LA C/L
OS is great stuff for us sportsmen. My fp35 never requires a needle adjustment no matter how long between visits to the field. I have an fp40 I've flown a few times and from what I can tell it's just as reliable as the 35. I am going to use an fp25 on my new Skyray and have high hopes it's just as good as the others. I think snapping them up is a great idea.

Re: O.S. 40 & 46 LA C/L
Ian, while these engines are still available, I don't see them being around too much longer. My opinion only. That doesn't mean they're bad engines. I think they're the best thing that has happened to control line in the past 30 years. Early on, they were very easily affordable but the past two years I've seen a substantial increase especially with the .46. The LA .46 makes awesome power for control line. I base my assessment on Tower Hobbies. When I start seeing price increases, I usually see discontinued not far in the future. It's a trend I've witnessed on many products that I've purchased from them for control line specific items. The engine may not be the powerhouse for the R/C gang, but this is a true stunt engine that doesn't need more money poured into it to make it work for stunt. In terms of weight, it's lighter than the LA .40 and in most cases even uses less fuel. This is due to the venturi size on the engine. It can easily swing a variety of props up to a 12-5 in control line making it very user friendly. I use one now with a APC 12.25" prop. Parts are easily available and they just run superb. Ken

With the pound-dollar conversion, that's just over 61 dollars. The local hobby shop that carries C/L stuff sells them new for 79 dollars. I'll pay the extra 18 to know the engine hasn't been abused. I'm just always suspicious of used engines.

Those are USA prices
Here an OS 46 LA would be £72.99
http://www.stevewebb.co.uk/index.php?pid=OS46LASILV&area=Engines
or $125.

Yes, a little pricey but then you have VAT, which is currently 23% is it not? rolled into the prices. That would bring the US price of $79 to $97. Then I imagine there is importation shipping. US, we have a direct path by ocean, wheres to UK the waterways are of greater distance. Also, there may be additional import tariffs rolled into the price.ian1954 wrote:Those are USA prices. Out of curiosity I checked, Fed Ex from Enya Metal Products, Miyoshi-Machi, Japan to New York City, NY is $266 US by International Economy shipping for a 5 kg (11 lb) package. To Cheshire, UK it is $354 US International Economy, which is 33% higher.
But reality is we have costs and product availability involved that we do not control. So, one adjusts accordingly where they live, and makes the best of it.
