049 backplate never seen before

049 backplate never seen before
I've got a backplate with only 1 filler tube. When looking from the engine, the tube is on the right. On the left, there are no signs of modifications or plugs. The surface is bronze coloured as the rest of the backplate. From which engine could this be? How would you be able to fill the tank without a vent?

Is there no small hole next to the filler tube? Is the tube drilled all the way through?
Re: 049 backplate never seen before
You' re right Jacob, there is a tiny hole next to the tube. I didn't see that. The tube seems to be drilled but it's not a straight hole.

Re: 049 backplate never seen before
If I recall correctly, those backplates came out sometime in the mid to late 70s. They were used on engines like the Babe Bee.
Re: 049 backplate never seen before
Lieven,
This was a production backplate that was a late production item. I looked in the Cox Collector manual and it indicates that the backplate showed up on the Babe Bee in March 1978, but I didn't check to see if it showed up earlier than that, so it could have. I purchased a replacement tank and backplate from a store several years ago, and it was this type, with only one fill tube. I also have several Pee Wee backplates with only one fill tube. What usually happens when I fill the tank, is it squirts out the fill tube. I haven't noticed any degradation in performance, although I do prefer having two fill tubes. Hope this helps. Andy

If there ever is a case when there is no vent, like when I've plugged one of the nipples for inverted flight, I fill with a syringe with a small enough needle to let the air out around the needle.
