This one is a trifle wierd.  A flywheel propeller engine?  Frankencub, or production?  Pull starter maybe?

Looks like a hub for a pull string with the knurling in it but what it's off of I don't know. Could be a car or boat engine with a prop on it yes it is a strange one Huh...

That's out of a Comet RTF plane. Not sure which one. I got one very simlar which I identified as coming from a Sabre 44. Only figured it out by the angle of the cylinder compared to the position of the firewall.

Looks like it might be the Sabre. I couldn't find any other Comet models with the cylinder mounted on that angle. There was some variation as time went on. Mine doesn't have the pully and has a red tank. I think I got mine under the same circumstances, one bid, real cheap.

This one doesn't have the starter pully, so may be like mine.

My Sabre 44 was similar to this one. It had the string starter (what a PITA) and a red tank  I don't remember a baffle on the exhaust but hey, that was mid fifties.

BTW didn't overlook that Champion glow plug. :-)

Looks like a pulley for one of those plastic Zip starters, that some of the RTF's used.

Yeah, looks a bit like that, but they were only for wrapping string around. Sounds like a fool-hardy idea to me.

It WAS fool-hardy. I liked mine so much I just flipped it and ignored the string. A year or two later the Sabre44 appeared with the pull-starter. Never had one of those.

Never had much luck with my Sabre44, it was like a brick on a string. I "flew" it on ~10 ft. lines and I believe most of the power to get it into the air was from "whipping" it.

OK Cub .049B?????? Empty Recoil starters on 0.049's

Post  706jim Mon Dec 22, 2014 10:34 am

I guess OK figured that if a recoil starter was a good idea for a lawn mower or outboard motor, it should be good for a model as well.

Except that I could see the string getting caught in the prop, the motor mount cracking when pulling against a flooded engine and can anyone remember how unreliable recoil starters on ANY engine were back then?

It would have to be the first thing to break.

This is how the Automite's manual says to operate the string. Kind of a upside down shoe shine action with a hefty pull on the back string.

Ah, that also answers my question about the Automite in the other post. Looks like it does go clockwise. I wonder why they made it opposite to most ofther tether cars?
For starting I think it would be a good idea to have a friend on hand to help hold things.

Thanks for posting that. Wild doings, laughed my way through the water scenes. I painted and installed the cleat on the front of the boat and found a sort of scale driver for the car. He should of eaten his Wheaties when he was younger, but he will do for now. Smile

Yes, the instructions say to hold the car down with your knee. Sounds like a crushed car.

Thanks Eric, and welcome to the club.  Interesting engine with an extension sticking out of the intake???  I haven't seen that before.

I added another Automite.  This one is really a mess but should clean up.  Looks like it was last ran over wet cement.  I got it because it has no provisions for a muffler or a driver.  My first one has holes in the body for a muffler and one in the cockpit for a driver.  I wonder which one came first, probably the no holes car and they added the driver and muffler later.

They added the extensions to the venturi when fitted to some RTF planes to get the intake out into the fresh air. It also puts it above the exhaust port to stop it breathing its own exhaust. Plus, it restricts the intake a little more to allow steadier fuel draw, not that stunting was ever a big thing with Comet models fitted with a Cub. Wink
I read somewhere that somone ran a Cub without the extension as a test and slipped a business card between the cylinder and venturi and gained several hundred rpm simply by diverting the exhaust fumes from the intake.

Hi Rod,

You're right about the small venturi for better draw, but it was to help with starting and mixture adjustment. performance was a wash, clean air but smaller intake.

Here's one of Comets very first ads (c. 1956) notice its the early tail dragger version.
