There is something about a flat twin that appeals to me. Maybe that is why I have a BMW motorbike but that engine is 12,000 times the size of one of these!

The first Rasant flat twin that Ronald produced is (you've guessed it) the MkI. A flat twin isn't easy to build - especially in this size. These engines have a one piece crank shaft and divided connecting rods. The connecting rods are held with two miniature screws. It is hard to image the size of these screws.

These engines were produced in 2003 with the engine crank case being machined from bar stock and sand blasted. 30 of these engines were built, no mean feat for a one man operation. The cylinders and spinner were anodized in blue. All of these engines have 2 intake and 2 exhaust ports.

Then came the Mk II in 2006. These time a radially mounted engine as opposed to the beam mounted MkI. Same performance and weight. The production engine was also machined from bar stock and sand blasted. Only 10 of these were produced but this example is a prototype that was built from a cast crankcase.

Along comes the Mk III. This time it is smaller, lighter and has an increase in performance.

Total combustion         2x0.098 cc
Weight                      18.5 gram

Then the Rasant Twin rear rotary valve 2 x 0.098 ccm R/C diesel engine appeared. RR stands for rear rotary valve. It has a tiny R/C carburetor. Five of these engines were made. The rear rotary Rasant has 3 intake and 3 exhaust ports.

Ian.
I can't imagine having just one Valentine engine but it looks like you have an entire collection of them. How many do you have?

I have never counted them but because of their value I cannot keep them in one place. All my engines are now spread across 8 storage locations in many boxes - it is not possible to insure them in one place. I only keep my restoration projects at home. I cycle the boxes so that I can keep them oiled and check that they are not seizing but that is over a period of 12 months. I only keep the engines here for one week.

I am envious of the chaps and chapesses (female chaps) that are able to display their engines but a few of my fellow collectors, one has 3,500 engines and another 5,000+, have the same problem in the UK.

It does cause me problems as well. When I get a new collectable, I wait until the right box comes along update the inventory and then send it for storage. Sometimes I forget to update the inventory and so I have to "guess" which box it is in. Somewhere, I have a mint Holland Hornet - one day I will come across it - every time I see a picture of one on this site.......grrrrr! I can't find mine!

One day I will consolidate my inventories! The trouble is, when I start going through my lists it make me feel like some sort of miserly scrooge. Hence, my Christmas caption.

I do wish there was a totally safe way of keeping my jewels close at hand. Another pal of mine build a storage vault in a new home he had build. He collects watches - some of them are so expensive I daren't touch them let alone wear one! It cost thousands!

WOW!!  Sounds like we're among greatness.  Me, I'm just a pocket money collector.  I don't think I should refer to myself as a collector after this.  Embarassed

I assume these twin gems are just way expensive to use them? Typical collection items? Or any video showing them run? Must be an exercise to set the contra-pistons equally on both sides plus the carb to get the max power out?

You wouldn't want to break one! They are delicate and I have only run the MkII. That was easy to mount without marking it. All these engines have been run by Ronald Valentine - they were the prototypes.

Where the crankcases are sand blasted, they are difficult to mount without leaving an imprint. The MkII was easy to start but care has to be taken not to flood the engine or it would be ruined.

I have run up a few multi cylinder engines, if you look at this posting

https://www.coxengineforum.com/t6778-multi-cylinder-valentines

You will get the gist of what has to be done. These are tiny engines and I have big fingers. I am extremely nervous when starting one. It is also difficult to find suitable propellers for these tiny engines.

This posting also gives an idea of the size of these engines and you will understand why you will not see them running often.

This is a video of a 0.098 running. The chap used a home brew starter to fire it up (rather him than me!)

You have a splendid collection Ian! I met Ron a couple of years ago at the Perry Georgia swap meet here in the US. We spoke at length. He mentioned he had a customer in UK who bought many engines from him; that must have been you. I had my DiVa .006 in my display case. He took a small case from his jacket. It held the radial, the Vee 4, and 3 sizes of singles smaller than the DiVa.006. I set them up with a US quarter for the picture. The .006 is the big engine in the lower left.Rasant Flat twins 0.098cc x2 Ron_va10

He has a few customers in the UK and I know two of them. One of them only collects sub 1.5 cc diesels - his collection is amazing and he has rarer than rare engines. Some of these we have not been able to identify.

Ronald's engines are my favourite (next to PAWs!) (and Oliver Tigers!!) and each one is unique. Being hand crafted each one of the same version is slightly different but the internals are true micro millimeter accurate.
