Hey guys.

First real quick, I just got in my email a link to the latest Cox Engine Quarterly as Bernie posted a couple hours ago and am excited to see Rusty has an article on doing your first loop.  I can't wait to get reading that.

Is the mount in the picture below for a Tee Dee .049 suitable for mounting the engine to a firewall on a plane or is this designed to be used as just a test mount?  It's got only 2 holes, at 6 and 12 o'clock.  I certainly could drill 4 new holes to make it a 4-hole mount if nothing else precludes me from using this as a mount.  It came with the engine which I bought used.  Don't believe I've ever seen an engine mounted to a plane with just 2 screws but had to ask since it does seem made for the engine.

It will work with two holes, personally though I usually put three, one on the top and two one the bottom below the mounting beams however with that being a solid aluminum mount it can be a bit heavier than a standard glass filled nylon mount. Also the mounting screws look pretty large comparing the screw heads of course that might just be me. (Bandit)

That mount looks like a mount that my friend Mike made. We were using them for TD and Norvel combat. We did that so that the mount would break off in a ground strike rather than rip the front end off. We were using a box style fuse with 1/8" lite ply. We would glass the nose and use blind nuts with soft steel screws in the same positioning you have on yours. We needed them for nose weight over the standard Dave Brown mounts. In addition, every time I use a Dave Brown mount, they fail directly at the rear screws. I started to drill and tap the mounts to avoid this and so far they work. Ken

I'd certainly want 3 or 4 holes. If you build for this mount, I recommend blind nuts(T-nuts) behind a fiberglass reinforced firewall with 4-40 hex socket bolts.2-56 if you're challenged for space.

Here's my favorite radial TD/Medallion/Norvel mount.
It replaces the backplate, so you can unscrew the engine from it without removing the mounting bolts.

And Ken beat me to the first part of my answer. I like his idea of soft bolts as a sacrificial joint in the mount.

Thanks Bandit. These screws are just for the test stand.

Thanks also Ken and Rusty. Great article BTW Rusty on looping in the Cox International newsletter.
