wd40 fuel injected cox engine

I wonder also if there is any long term effects to running these on WD-40, or would it even run out a full tank if so filled with it? I do believe other than the aerosol version, it is thicker than glow fuel so it may not suck up the fuel tube well.

Very interesting. I would expect that the long term effects would be largely from ...wait for it...improper lubrication! The WD40 is acting like a diesel fuel, but the bottom of the engine is not getting lubed in this method. Filling the tank would provide some lubrication, but WD40 is pretty volatile and will not hang around where it is needed when things get hot.

Now, with a good castor load would WD40 make a good "diesel" replacement?

Alas, I sold my diesel engine. I have a Davis head around here somewhere, but never liked the teflon disk bit...

WD-40 is basically a mild solvent known as Stoddard solvent. I've never ran a 1/2a on it, but used it for years to help start larger size "glow" engines in really cold weather, so I'm not surprised to see it run, however i don't see it running without the glowplug connected. The "glow" engine is very much like a diesel, with the catalytic reaction from the platinum coil and alcohol in the fuel to keep it firing.

Kind of makes me wonder if WD-40 would help cold weather starts.. along with a few wraps of yarn around the glow-head.. as Phil has suggested in the past. I've never tried the yarn.. but I want to!

i have ran it not anto afterwards and without the glow plug connected but i was showing how you can you can use it a throttle by limiting the amount of wd 40 going into the cylinder but the glow plug lets go at the so slow rpm

I think the engine runs with the aerosol propellant, that's butane pr something, isn't it? I don't think it would run with the actual WD40 liquid alone.

You're right Greg, it does run on WD40 after all. I'll take your word for it. No IC engine would run on CO2

   My friend George in New Zealand, a Cox engine guy, runs his Jeep diesel on used cooking oil. He makes the rounds of un local restaurants, he lives in Northland on the remote end of the North island, every couple of months and picks up their used cooking oil and drives off happy as a Kiwi, or is that Australia's bird. LOL

Diesel engines run on almost any oil product. They are such high compression engines that ignition can occur with most low grade oils.
   A little help anyone?

That's about it in a nutshell. There are some issues of oils eating fuel lines (solved sometime in the 1990's with better rubber compounds), and temperature, since most used cooking oils solidify at a rather high temperature, between room temperature and freezing water, but if it is warm out, temperatures above typical room temperature, then just add filtered vegetable oil to the fuel tank and run the engine! NO MODIFICATIONS _REQUIRED_ although a tank heater is highly recommended.

There are some added issues with high moisture content and less combustible molecules in the vegetable oil, and the high solidification temperature, so Bio-Diesel is made via partial soponification of the oil to cause the glycerine to seperate leaving a "dry" product that also does not solidify until below freezing. Bio-diesel also has better lubrication properties than low-sulfur diesel, and acts as a cleaning agent for fuel system parts, so bio-diesel is used in low sulfur fuels as an additive.

Living here in Portlandia, there were quite a few of the french fry cars rolling around a few years ago when it was the "new thing" to run on used cooking oil from restaurants. They have a very distinctive and odd smell to them...

I have had larger engines start on WD-40 without the glow plug connected. Never tried it with a Cox though.

WD-40 may cause premature bushing and piston/cylinder wear, as it contains none of the lubricating ingredients found in glow fuel.

In fact, WD-40 makes a very poor lubricant in almost any application!

WD-40 is actually a water displacer and not a lubricant. I think it was developed for the space shuttle program. It was supposedly the 40th formula, thus WD-40. I do not know if this is totally correct but I have heard it many times.
