Re: RR1 powered airplane
Yes, Kim. Weird sounds. Sounds like my old 1937 Ford 60 hp flat head did at full chat.
I was waiting for one of the outboard engines to quit after the center one did. Not as dramatic aerodynamically as I thought it would be. Nice rudder/elevator movements there.
Three RR-1's running together, on an airplane in the air. And I treat my single RR-1 like gold. Perhaps I shouldn't.

Re: RR1 powered airplane
A glorious day in the life of the BOT. Love the whistling wind after the great racket of the RR1s went quiet.

I'd been wanting to try multiple engines ever since watching this fellow fly his 8 .010 engined Spruce Goose at the S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In several years ago. This model is really just a sailplane...long wings-lightly loaded with a big rudder, and I made note of his technique in flying it: Take-off, make a pass or two for the cameras, then go for altitude.
As the engines quit, it was easy to counter any asymmetrical thrust by trading a little altitude for airspeed. Even if a couple were still running as the height wore down, he had no trouble sliding the Hercules onto the grass runway.
I did the same with the B.O.T. (and the twin-engine Lazy Bee), went for height, holding my breath right after launch because I sure didn't want to get caught down low with just two pulling. Once I had some altitude in the bank, I could relax and enjoy the weird sounds coming from the sky!
And yeah, if I got it, I figure it ought to run or fly...got very few Hangar Queens in the Skunk Works (there IS a Sig Bearcat that I started as a sophomore in High School that's never flown, and IT'S now getting looked at to maybe get a .15 stuck in it and launched!). For me, this allows a lot more actual fun to happen, AND let's me off the hook of "Collector's Syndrome" of saying, 'Man, you should have seen these run back in the day...'.
I DO actually 'Have My Cake and Eat it Too" !
