They have star-shaped brass reed valves. Anyone know which engine uses them? Click on picture to enlarge.

Definitely Testors rear ends. Can't say I've ever seen a brass reed in one, but there were a few variations.
Bernie, I'd be in for a couple once you get them on the market.

I agree intact those go to the metal cased PB (Pipe Bomb) engines (Bandit)

Thanks for the answers and, as we also received Testors engines and parts with the 100's of Enya, Webra and OS Max parts, that makes sense.

Diameter of the part that goes into the engine is 16.6mm (or 0.575" for our friends south of the border Smile ). As we sold all the Testors engines, we cannot see if they fit those but perhaps someone can now definitely confirm that they are for the Testors .049 "pipe bomb" engine"

They are for sale and what would be a fair price?

Upon closer inspection, the reeds are not brass. They are black and perhaps plastic?

Send me one and I'll test the fit for you free of charge lol! I do actually need one as I have a never run metal case unit that is missing the spring starter and also the NVA is missing. The rest of the backplate is there. And I also have a NIB glowhead for it so I may want to play with it some time.

Not sure about the fair price. These are not the most collected engines in the world but on the other hand there most likely are people who would want these bad. If you want to move them, maybe the price could be something like 50 or 75% of the comparable Cox assembly?

I meant a plastic backplate with the reed valve and the retainer. In my opinion a postage stamp version would be "direct analogy", but a horseshoe would be close too.

But then again I am no expert on the subject Smile

The part that holds the reed and spraybar... The surestart back without reed is $1.95, with reed and retainer, needle, and gaskets $5.95.

So apparently somewhere in this range, or half this range, is suggested.

However an original white postage stamp with spraybar only is listed at $6.95.

I guess the issue is what can you sell them for and make a profit?

I have no idea the demand of this part. I think I would include one in my next order, I haven't gotten my Testors engine to run yet, but I was not working up an order right now. (Ill admit to not trying very hard on this engine yet)

Well, I was struck when I saw the part, and thought it looked familiar.
Cox made a part just like it for the Shinn cl plane, in aluminum and plastic.
They used a circlip and a star reed and were held to the case by the firewall.
The ones you have look like they might be a snap-in deal, like the pipe bomb tank.

If they fit the bomb, I'd buy one.

Not having a needle valve will bring their value right down, along with the fact that there's probably only 20 people around the world who could be bothered with a Testors Pipe Bomb.
(I'm one lol! )
I'd say equivalent to your white horseshoe backplate at $3.95, although that doesn't have the reed & retainer.

The big problem is going to be the needle. When I was looking for a new pipe bomb needle, I couldn't find anything that would work other than a genuine Testors/Wen-Mac needle. I only see those pop up occasionally, and you're looking at close to $10.00 shipped.

If those assemblies fit into the GRP bodied Testors cases, they'd be a little easier sell. But they don't, the GRP bodied cases need a molded ridge on the needle assembly, and the metal pipe bomb engines without the back don't come up as often as the GRP cased ones do. Not sure how to market those, I'm afraid.

The reason the Cox backplates are so inexpensive is because we have over 12,000 of them and we are selling them for the price we would normally charge just for the spraybar. The Testors version we only have 12 and we could supply them with a reed, needle valve/spring and spraybar seal as per pictures, say for $6.95?

Yes, it's a Cox spraybar and needle valve/spring but the spraybar dimensions are identical.
