Anyone here into Giant Scale R/C Planes? Post Pics of your Planes.
Not only am I into the small COX powered planes, I also enjoy flying big planes too.
Here are a couple pics of my 2.3m (90 inch span) Composite Extra 330L that I built a couple years ago. It's supposed to be powered by a 50-60cc engine, but I powered by a Desert Aircraft DA-85 and is an absolute blast to fly. It's great for 3D flying but I plan on competing with it in local IMAC Pattern Contests next season. My 7 year old son is posing with it in the last pic for size comparison.

With a 50cc and standard muffler, the plane is anemic at best and it really needed a $200.00 plus tuned pipe and header to for decent performance, Also, with a 50cc, it would require almost a pound of weight in the tail to balance. And the 60cc's that were available at the time didn't really appeal to me so the 85 was the best choice. In fact. the 85 with a standard Pitt's style muffler is lighter than a DA-50 with a Grieves tuned pipe and header and it balanced perfectly without adding any tail weight. After it was built, I put it on the scale and it came out at 20.1 pounds with the fuel tank dry. It's a sweet combination.
As far as power goes, it will take off and cruise at a click or 2 above 1/4 throttle with the 26x10 Xoar wood prop. On my first flight with it rich, I hit full throttle once after pulling vertical and it went straight up like a bullet!!!

Yeah...they flew great...I can't remember the company that sold them. They were almost-ready-to-fly, and we went through a few of them. Neal, the guy with the racer hopped one up with a large engine, and loved to pull it vertical to almost out of sight.

When I lived in Orlando, I flew at a club called R.C.A.C.F. and at that time, members were required to work 10 hours a year for the club and I worked a pylon event as a Turn Marshal and the .40 size Mustang class planes were hitting speeds of over 200 m.p.h.!!Kim wrote:Yeah...they flew great...I can't remember the company that sold them. It was a lot of fun to see.

After seeing how much fun Pylon racing looked, I got a new Lanier Predator 500 ARF and a well used but nice JETT .40 and after a few "getting used to it" flights, my fastest speeds were clocked in the 135-140 ranges. It was quite the adrenaline rush!navion34 wrote:Yes Pylon racing is very fun to watch and fly too
