Yep, at first I thought these screws on my silver widow were nothing special, but after finding
out that flat head screws were the only kind used in cox engines, i don't know if i have a faked engine
or somethibng extremely unique on my hands. the engine is unused (when i got it) and was manufactured
in 1996. Did you guys ever encounter a similar engine? i'll try to put up some pictures as soon as i can.

I have an old Babe Bee with Philips heads and a Black Widow with the slot screws. Guess they took what they had...

yeah, it probably was just another attempt of cox/estes to streamline their production and
improve the engines...

They look like the real deal to me, the pattern is perfectly symmetrical and the same on all four screws. Looks to be a later production engine so I would say it was an attempt at improvement. From the pictures it appears that there is some wear on the backplate and the screw heads. Are you saying it is still an unused engine or that it was unused when you received it and you have used it since? The reason I ask is because maybe someone decided to change the screws out along the way.

it was described as "new and unused" when it came to me.
Although i've disassembled the engine only twice or so without gorrila handling the screws, they do seem pretty
worn out...i think they might have been made from softer metal or something Huh...

Perhaps,

The metal could very well be soft as most fastners of that size are not heat treated like the tools we use to dissassemble the engines with. They look like standard philister style with a wide cross pattern head. I would say they are genuine seeing as the engine is a later model.

They are real! I have several cox engines with Phillips head screws. Hopefully Mud can correct me on the exact date but I mostly find them on post 1996-7 engines. I don't remember the Venom having Philips head screws so it must be a Estes thing. My 1990 Black Widow has flat head screws while all of my Estes era cox engines have the Phillips head screws.

(Yeah, the screws are a little rough. It has been taken apart MANY times before as I once had starting and running trouble with it!)
