Not sure if I mentioned it or not, but threw a rod on my VW a few weeks back, on my way to fly CL of course!. I had a spare engine that was supposedly rebuilt, well it was but very poorly and there was all kinds of metal in the case when I broke it down. So $600 in parts later I am doing a complete rebuild, this isn't all bad as it allowed me to do some performance upgrades.

That's what I have been up to lately, just got back from Long Island, but wasn't able to meet up with Bob. Off to RI next week, hopefully Roddie has something for us to fly!

Looks oddly familiar. What year are we working on?

I helped my Dad rebuild a couple old air cooled VW engines way back when before I could drive. This was before classic VW was MONEY. A cousin had a VW boneyard and we built several "beaters" out if it until he sold it out when the price of classic VW parts and bodies started to skyrocket in the early 90's.

Is this out of the 1966 Beatle (Beatlemania) you posted about a while back?

Is it one of those forged hi-performance stroker crankshafts?

No, not for an airplane... for my bug.

Stock 66' was a 1300cc single port. This is a 1600 (1585cc) dual port, now it's going to be a 1679cc.

The crank and rods are chromoly and the crank is counterweighted. This will be bolted to a lightened flywheel.

I have a mild performance cam and ported heads to go with it and will retain the dual carb setup. If I can get 75-80hp out if it I'll be happy. Doesn't sound like much, but believe me a 25-30hp jump in a really light car makes a big difference.

It's called thrust-to-weight. A concept we should all be familiar with.

When I was in high school I had a beater bug with a 1679 and a Webber two barrel carb. My favorite thing to do was pull up next to a Pontiac Fiero at the light and leave them in the dust when it turned green.

Mark, your boy is really growing up isn't he.

My first time at the drag strip I was racing my '67 Camaro. I had bolted it together in my back yard after assembling the engine in my bedroom... still living at home with my Mom and Sis. I'd run a couple of passes and was ready to race somebody, and a bug pulled up next to me in the staging area. Looked like a '63 VW someone had used for a fishing car. I'm sitting there with a snorkle on the hood, slicks smoking and ready to hook up, 4-bolt 350 rumbling, and I looked over at the goofy bug and laughed. When the Tree lit, that ugly sumbitch was at the other end of the track before I hit 3rd gear.

Yeah Mark, pretty good shape for being up in the salt belt. Someone took care of it for sure. 1966 and earlier are the bugs I like the best, but the later models had some nice nice upgrades.
