Feeling a little guilty…

Re: Feeling a little guilty…
I've been following this thread.. and like all of Mark's builds; I find it very interesting and informative. I'd love to learn more stunts. "More" meaning; more than an inside-loop and flying inverted. That's about all I ever attempted.
This thread has spurred some interest in my building a Skyray (1/2A) "kit" (yes.. a kit) given to me by a deceased N.E.S.T. member back in the early 1990's. His name was "Clay".. so I may name it the "Clay-Ray"..
I like how Mark has adapted the "uni-gear" design to his model. The T/F "Flight-Streak" (and Jr.) used that arrangement. I'd assume that the outboard wing-tip weight would play an important role in successful R.O.G. take-offs. The T/F Jr. Streak's instructions state to point the model slightly "outer-circle" when launching.. and be sure that the flying-lines are held high; so-as not to snag on any weeds.

110 square inches would be suited to a strong reed engine, pretty close to the upper limit for CL stunt on a reed .049.

Exactly! Yes, to get the wing chord I wanted, I actually scaled the rib drawing to 53%. I just said 50% earlier because it was a round number. Great Job on your scaling!

Re: Feeling a little guilty…
Well, I finally got some time to finish the plane. I was waiting until I got the three Skyray 35’s finished before I did the final trim on all of them. The trim is just Monokote trim sheet cut into strips and overlaid to replicate the factory scheme. The tank is a ¾ ounce Perfect wedge tank on suction. The Medallion is a well used engine pulled from another model I ran a couple of weeks ago, so it should run fine. Prop is a Cox 5x3.
The total weight is 5.7 ounces. More than I’d hoped for, but should still be plenty light enough for the Medallion .049. My son’s slab wing Skyray with a black widow weighs 6.3 ounces, so I’m ahead of the game. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to fly for a while so I’ll have to wait to do a flight report.

Re: Feeling a little guilty…
The easiest solution to a single geared plane on launch is to launch with the outboard tip hard on the ground. Don't yaw the nose outboard because if you do, the plane can bounce inward towards the pilot when the outboard wing comes up. Just hold the tip hard on the ground and release. No worries. However, you can bend the single nose wheel about 30 deg inboard like the speed flyers and the plane won't bounce inboard on release.

With a 3/4 oz tank, what's your estimate on flight times with that Medallion?

Sorry to take so long to answer, Kim. I figure about four minutes or so.
