I have tried to determine just what I am, collector, acquirer, accumulator, or just a guy that likes model airplane engines Single minded? Enya? No I have many different types of model engines. High ender? No, most of my engines are run of the mill with a few odd balls thrown in.

True collectors include diesels. I haven't a one. I passed on this diesel Enya

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Enya-15D-II-Gas-model-engine-from-1962-in-original-box-very-good-condition-/182415102682?hash=item2a78c992da:g:4-sAAOSw-0xYcprU

and another that went for $260 last week. I never made a bid on either. Strange for me considering that it's an Enya.

Ian is a collector along with fellows over on R/C Groups that think nothing about buying a $1600.00 gold plated OS Max.

So, that settled. I don't qualify as a "collector" but just a mechanic that enjoys old beat up engines and their repair.

Whew, glad I got that off my mind. Smile

I consider "Gold Plated" beneath me. Anyone can have anything gold plated.

Now solid gold - I might consider but I have a preference for platinum.

I think that although you definitely have the collectors addiction with a predilection for Enyas.

I am surprised that this hasn't also influenced your taste in music.

but perhaps you are keeping that secret,

However, I do detect that you may also be suffering fro "dieselphobia"  - who would pass up an Enya diesel?

Proof that I'm not a "collector" Enya_s12

Still - we all make mistakes and occasionally end up with one of those glowy things!

I'd buy that (no pun intended). I always considered 'collectors' to be those whose assembly of engines and plane kits is primarily for display, like those 'collector guns' that plummet in value if you put a round through them.

Though some may be parked for long periods of time, NONE are out of danger of being hauled into the daylight and fired up.

So...no 'collector' here either...

Your one of my many heros here Ian.  Collector is not a four letter word.  I just don't qualify for that exalted status.  Maybe I'm too cheap to pay the diesel premium instead gathering a bunch of worn out old greasy castor locked wanna-be's.

Collectors love these, and it is err, very, very nice, and I surely don't begrudge them of it's company.

The folks over on RC Groups say the entrance price is $1600.00 per copy.  I tend to get short shrift over there with my Enyas. Smile

Bob

Edit add. You have to know that I search "Enya" on ebay almost every day and always considered Enya the singer "clutter". But I must admit I really enjoyed that link. Beautiful music and a beautiful production.

i guess i'm not really a collector, ok maybe a cheep collector, i don't have any really high dollar stuff, only collected small glow engines, no diesels, no ignition jobs and many of my plastics were semi baskets...

I guess i'm a hobbyist, that likes to dabble and do some collecting.

Me too. For some weird reason I like to clean up old dirty engines.

I would like to get my collection of "used but presentable" Cox engines about 95% complete, so I guess I am a bit of a collector too. I'll voluntarily skip the rarest ones though. Preferring used engines over the NIB ones is not entirely a money issue, I just like to play with my toys Smile I get that empty and restless feeling when there is no more engines to clean up and fix... I am down to less than 10 so I'll need to get some more pretty soon.

I also have a stamp collection and I prefer used stamps where you can see the place and date where that exact stamp has departed. Some folks, maybe the majority nowadays, collect unused stamps and that's fine by me, I personally just prefer used (but neat and clean) ones.

Anyway, I don't think there is anything wrong being a collector. Especially when many of those old scruffy engines would end up getting junked otherwise.

I think this is where they got the $1600.00 figure but it was an ebay no sale.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OS-MAX-11AX-24K-GOLD-PLATED-80TH-ANNIVERSARY-MODEL-ENGINE-ONLY-80-MADE-NIB-/282317515873?hash=item41bb6f6c61:g:9uIAAOSwEzxYcBlr&rmvSB=true

They are now sold out so maybe that's a speculators dream.  They still have some of the less expensive editions available.

They are getting into some Cox variations

I'm with Kari on this one--none of my engines ( 67 at the last count ) are NIB, only 2 are even close. I like to play with my toys, fiddle with them, run them, even take them apart to admire the ingenuity of the little critters--who's gonna do THAT to a 'collectable' minter!! Just as well I'm not into classic cars...

Proof that I'm not a "collector" Empty Re: Proof that I'm not a "collector"

Post  roddie Sat Jan 14, 2017 4:15 pm

I could call myself a collector.. Laughing just ask my wife.. I'm not a collector though. I'm a sick hoarder of anything that I think I can use to build a model airplane. I don't just see an engine mounted to an airframe. I see all the little bits and pieces. I also dramatize in my modeling. When I was young, I was fascinated with dioramas.. and built a few. I love the CEF "Engine of the Month".. particularly when I see the staging used in some of the presentations.

I built a little Dumas Mahogany/Birch speed-boat.. and also made a scale dock with slips at the shore.

I'm a collector of stock; thin plastic-sheet goods.. in clear, translucent and opaque. Windscreens, windows and canopies is what I imagine. Exotic woods... wheels is another favorite thing to collect/stock. They're often the best functional-option for balancing an airplane to fly.

Collecting anything.. I feel is an extension of who we are. Nostalgia or the appreciation of design is usually the fuel. I'm a kid at heart.. literally. I enjoy playing with mechanical things.

I never counted my engines and probably wouldn't want to. In addition, I just like to pull them of the shelves from time to time. Reminisce a bit, ponder about what model I would like them to go in. Wife thinks I'm out of my mind actually. She hears the occasional engine flip and just wonders what satisfaction one achieves by a grimy ole engine that smokes and makes noise. I don't like new examples, there a pain in the rear to break in, I just want them to run and go fly it. Used examples takes that out of the picture. The well seasoned castor baked Fox's have a place in my heart. I own a lot of them and they all have different attitudes.

I can just see that golden OS pictured above covered in baked on castor.

Did anybody catch this?  Runs in less than 2 minutes.

I can see it becoming one of Kim's "lawn darts", but ground level inverted flight is pretty neat.........

Off topic a little, but the video prompted me.  It amuses me the way people run when they're hand-launching a plane.  If it needs speed to fly, you can swing your arm far quicker than most of us can run.  Particularly on a C/L plane, trying to run around the circle while maintaining the correct arc & keeping the lines at the right tension is near impossible.  Generally, most clips I see of this show an unsteady person running over uneven ground, which in my opinion is fraught with danger.  Just stand still and throw the thing folks.

Yes, Kris, but you have to take them out of the box and fondle them at times. Smile

Pulled these MRC's out this morning and lined them up. A couple are recently found .29/.35 NIB both with the spare HC head. It seems like the boxed MRC's are not as sort after as the red/yellows.

Hey, 1/2aNut, can you check with your friend in France and verify that he has a  Cox TD 016?  Unless he modified the bore or stroke himself I'm only aware of Cox 010 and 020 in the small sizes.

Rod, your right, the hand launch with the "run 'n toss" is recipe for crash on release. Makes for entertaining  funny video though.

Could be that (by mistake?) he stated the size in "metric", as .010CI = 0.16cc.

I've seen that video earlier and was wondering about the same thing Smile

Only men collect. Beers  Women don't care about the toys they had as a child, or even the clothes that they wore. They don't care about the past, only the present. Female related items are less valuable unless it's made of gold or diamonds. Huh... So, if you are a man, you collect. Beers
