Help! Roy Cox Thimble Drome Champion tether car

Post  markiemark Sun Jul 01, 2018 3:49 am

Hi all, i'm new to tether cars and new to this forum.

I purchased this tether car at auction last weekend as I've always been interested in having one just for display.
The lot description was "Roy Cox Thimble Drome Champion tether car with glow plug engine, circa 1950s, original used condition, untested, 24cm long approx."

Although it's just for display I'd actually like to know if it runs and is complete. Is there anyone in this forum from Australia who could test run it for me. It doesn't need to go around a track just get the wheels spinning. Alternatively, if someone can point me to a basic instruction page for a beginner so that I can buy what I need to get it running that would be helpful.

Help! Re: Roy Cox Thimble Drome Champion tether car

Mark, the car looks great. The engine/drivetrain looks complete to me, although I'm not all that familiar with tether cars.
I'm well familiar with overhauling model engines so I'm happy to help if I can. I'm in the Gippsland area, Victoria.

Help! Re: Roy Cox Thimble Drome Champion tether car

Hi Mark
Nice score.
Looking at your pictures, externally it appears only the decorative hand brake lever is broken, otherwise it looks very original.

The hand brake lever and many other parts for your car, if needed, are available from "TLC Enterprise" at this website.

There was another supplier, "Toy parts Peddler" in Hancock Minnesota but that web address now appears inactive.

Here’s a scan of an instruction booklet for a Cox Champion with a .19 engine but the basic starting procedure is probably the same for all three motor sizes that these cars came with.

There’s plenty of people on here with more knowledge of these cars than me so they will be able to help you with fuel mix and starting.

Here's some more info on them.

Help! Re: Roy Cox Thimble Drome Champion tether car

Post  Ken Cook Sun Jul 01, 2018 7:00 am

The plug shown in the Cox ad is one that can be rebuilt. I'm pretty certain of that. I have about a dozen of those plugs. I believe the car shown in the pic has a Arden glow plug. I'm quite certain it still works, I would opt for a new plug though. The older plugs can really taxi the battery and seem to draw a bit more current than a modern plug which doesn't make it glow optimally when starting. One problem I have encountered with this same car is that the tank can leak at the filler pipes so something to check.

Thanks for the offer of help. I'm in Sydney but if in Vic I might take you up on that offer one day.
