Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero

Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Not that Charlie Brown, but the real thing
I'm half way through this book, read up through the high point this morning. Not sure if it's the climax or not. Not there yet.
A true story of two pilots, one flying a German BF-109 the other a battle damaged B-17. Tragic, emotional and inspirational. Candy bars for the kids that were never delivered.
Just thought I would share.
Bob

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Hi Bob,
The context of the book always held an interest for me (WWII). The circumstances described were enough that I looked up the book online, and got to read a few pages...then I ran out of "preview."
I got out of work early today since Weather.com showed partially sunny, 49 deg, andn3 mph winds. I hoped to fly the P-40. Unfortunately my phone had switched to Washington DC weather, not Columbus, MS.
So just now, I checked with the local library. They had a copy. Now I have that copy. So I'm a half-book behind you! So, now I'm settled into the couch under a blanket with the fireplace burning. It is too cold, and too windy to fly. But just right for a cup of tea and a good book!
Don't spoil it for at least 72 hours! Give me a chance to catch up.

Sounds cozy guys.
It's a good book that I'm sure you will find fascinating and difficult to put down.
I don't know how it ends, we will probably get there together.

1/3 way in...stopped only for dinner. Fascinating read! Still on the German character, and waiting for the American part. Not disappointed at all.
It won't stop me from flying tomorrow, and in fact may spur me on...the book mentioned P-40s early on.
Thanks Bob!

I found that curious, P-40's bouncing 109's? On paper and in the sky the 109 was the superior aircraft. Comes down to pilots and tactics I guess.
2/3rd's. Your up to me. Interesting insight on the end of days air war and command structure. Galland received a lot of notice after the war and became an interesting historical figure. Lot's of archived footage of him has been weaved into documentaries.

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
I got as far as the "initial meeting of the two key characters (including B-17 crew)," and their initial respectice "returns to earth."
Once "the encounter played out," I was surprised by how much book is actually left. Hopefully I can find time to finish it this weekend.
All I can say is "Wow!" This should be a movie.

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Marley/Bob,
I just finished. This is the first time I've ever read the afterword of a book, or reviewed the author's website. I even watched the author's videos.
This needs to be a movie
I won't wreck it for Marley...but I will say the ending is a tear-jerker! As a member of the US armed forces for too many years, all I can say is the book has challenged me about my own service and deployments. Just...Wow!
For all you others, I challenge you to read the book. How can a bunch of model aircraft enthusiasts NOT know this story?

Oh, and for Bob...Thanks a bunch! I consider the last 12 hours of reading worth the time invested.

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Your welcome.
Finished it last night binge reading, couldn't put it down before going to sleep not knowing the ending.
8 PM a choice, Cowboys/Seahawks or A Higher Call. Chose the book.
Bob
Edit add:
And yes, we want to share everything about the book and it's characters, but you don't want to spoil it for others either.

Yes Sir, this is one whale of a good Tail! Pun intended. Like most every story the author has to set up the stage and characters. This guy did years or research to get all the interconnected stories and details correct. Wow, what a ride. Yeah, if you can stay dried eyed thru the last chapers, you aren’t connected to other human beings. What tremendous real life true story. Highly recommended for reading.

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Glad you liked it Rene.
Yes, Adam Makos did a great job researching this book, took him years. Dedication.
My next read is "Mission" about the actor Jimmy Stewart (It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Glenn Miller Story.) Hollywood studios tried to get him a cushy desk job during WW2 but he chose to fly combat missions in an B-24 Liberator over Germany instead.

Re: Charlie Brown, a West Virginia hero
Jimmy Stewart - didn't he also play Lindbergh in the movie about the Spirit of St Louis ? anyway, one of the last books on Aviation I read and highly recommend is "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K Gann
Heard about this title from an English fellow on another RC forum. His comment on someones post of their recent Crash, was "well, she was a ground loving bitch" Made me LOL and i sent a post saying that was gonna be my next planes name!! He replied he couldn't take credit for the saying as it was from this Book and author. He recommend I read the book, which I did. Very Good Story.
