I have sworn off ebay purchases but I couldn't pass this one up. BIN.

A ball bearing 4006 that you don't see everyday as most made were bushed yet shared the same number designation.

The seller did not show the business end in his photos so I was stymied as to it's function. Looks to be a belt drive but not a good one as it's way out of round. Any ideas?

The heat sink is a friction fit and removed with a screwdriver twist.

Needs a good AF boil before I remove the front end.

Looks like a boat engine, possibly v for starting?

Car engine with centrifugal clutch and extra cooling for the head, a DYI-part I guess. The V-part is for starting it by using a belt. Carb seems to be a Perry one, looks very much like ones that were used on the HB .15 engines.

Yes, V groove for a starter, I have a boat with a similar system for starting but a shaft drive.

Maybe a flywheel, but nothing can be attached to it for motive power other than a belt that I can see.

Nice Perry carburetor though.

#'s 587 on both pieces are curious.

It looks like the Bell and clutch style that you find on cars. The Bell part is missing and will go outside of the clutch.

Hi Bob
I think it would have had a hub that fits over those two arms on the clutch. When the motor turns the arms move out and grip on the hub which is connected to the drive shaft. You might have to fabricate one as the original is probably still in whatever the motor came out of.

Oops, too late . Surfer Kris beat me too it.

Wow. Both very neat, and very interesting. Now if only teh engine could talk and tell you, and us, its history. I also see that it appears to be run properly on fuel with castor based oil!

Ah yes, centrifugal clutch with the hex head machine screws as the pivot. Pins must not go all the way through. Reason for the ball bearing. Home made affair maybe?

Perry carb made for fine speed control with the clutch engaging at a certain rpm.

I would love to know what it powered.

I guess it was part of a Kyosho Dash 1. This Japanese car was generally equipped with an Enya 19 engine. The heatsink is different from the Kyosho heatsink. The kyosho cars and Enya engines were imported in Europe by Robbe.

The crankshaft is different from the standard Enya 19 and has an imperial thread. I mounted one in my Mardave Marauder and that goes very well.

Thanks all,

I ran this by Bob Allan of Enya research fame and he couldn't tag it as to function, but mentioned the heat sink was of Japanese manufacture. I also contacted the seller and he said the original owner had passed but was into model airplanes. Not much there.

I like the clutch/hub idea to turn a shaft powering either boat or car. But there should be a lining on each "shoe" allowing slippage as metal to metal contact could be brutal. Think brake shoes in reverse only to go not to stop.

The bell was probably the part that had a fiber lining.  It looks like an earlier helicopter clutch.  The heat sink is also similar to early helicopter heat sinks.  I don't know of any helicopters that might have used that engine though and the few that I'm familiar with used a shaft for starting rather than a belt.
They also usually had a fan of some sort, at least the ones I know of.

My guess is that it's a helicopter engine. Is there a prize???

After thinking about it for a few, the Hirobo Shuttle used a belt for starting and was in the same size range. Very possibly it's from a forunner of the Shuttle or other Japanese heli.

I hadn't thought Helicopter Dave, but that's the best option.

The 4006 was a mid 70's/80's engine and Helicopters were just coming into their own at that time.  Enya did make an engine specifically for helicopters.  I have a couple of their car engines which could be adapted for helicopters.

Eric, the Enya is in the A/F boil pot right now.  When it's clean and loose I will take it apart and post pictures.

Freebee pictures......some prize Dave says.....Smile

Boiled the Enya for about four hours, Perry carburetor included. Worried a bit about the outcome but it did well, clean and no damage. The Enya came out predictably clean.

I removed the clutch system by backing off the assembly until I could unscrew the brass nut. I used tooth picks to block the piston.

Nicely constructed, expansion springs holding the clutches against force to a certain point. Must have been commercially available at the time, might even be now.

I was surprised to find the crankshaft keyed to the prop drive washer, not typical. Maybe only on the ball bearing or specialty engines.

I'm not going any further with this engine. Mount it and gaze. But, it would be easily converted back to R/C or C/L.

Is the bearing in the center of the brass nut a sprag clutch?  In other words, is it a one-way bearing?  If so, that could have been for a starter shaft.  That was a feature on some heli engines in the 70's - 80's.

Thanks for the pictures Bob!  This Site Rocks!

Bearing rotates both ways Dave. Might lock-up at speed but I doubt it.

Looks to be a bearing for a pilot shaft.

Welcome......... Smile

The bearing would be to support and centralise the clutch drum & drive shaft, otherwise gravity would cause the drum to rest against the shoes.
Bob, no problems with the clutch shoes being metal on metal. That's what most chainsaws and weed whackers use.
