What it takes to be a champion

What it takes to be a champion
While I was at the Northwest Regionals a couple of months ago, I was talking to Paul Gibeault about engines. He let me look in his little Box O' Magic and see how he documents his engines. I asked if I could take a picture and post it on the forum. Behold, what true dedication means:
The man is a true Master of Mouse Magic.
The Not Worthy Mark

I see that top L/H engine has a plastic back plate on it. As I recall, there was some previous thread that didn't speak too highly of plastic back plates. I wonder if anything special has been done regarding this example.

With any luck, Paul may log in here and see this and answer the question regarding the plastic backplate. But from what I can see is that there is a different needle valve assembly in the backplate. Is it possible that it is easier to remove and replace the needle assembly in a plastic backplate is easier than that of an original cast one?

Re: What it takes to be a champion
I wonder what he means with the .080" tank - backplate? Looks like maybe he took .020" off the case, or maybe that is what he wanted for headspace when he says deck .020". He seems to like nitro anyway. 65%.

Re: What it takes to be a champion
Not sure about the plastic backplate. I didn't ask too many questions of Paul, as I didn't want to take up too much of his time. There was racing going' on, ya know.
The .080, .081, or .089(???) I just naturally assumed was the venturi tube inner diameter, as the generally accepted optimum diameter for the venturi in a reedie is .082".

The optimum orifice size on a reedie is
Venturi.092
Backplate .085
No idea what is meant by deck ..020

Paul explains in his articles, deck height is what is more commonly called squish clearance.

OK, seems much higher than I would go, but I suppose I don't use 65% nitro any more.
