Tyvek hinges??

Tyvek hinges??
Hi guys! I've tried floppy disk hinges. They work well, but couldn't handle the hard landings over and over again (well, crashes really). My sewn hinges hold up really well, but they do look Frankenstein-ish. Of course, I should learn to sew smaller hinges and crash less. But where is the fun in that?
So that leads me to Tyvek hinges. I can buy a suit for a lifetime of hinges for all of us, or rob the PO for an envelope.
My two questions related to the material:
What glue works with it?
Will old school butyrate dope stick to it?
It sure feels like white Teflon when I look at samples!
Thanks for your sage advice, and experiences with this stuff.

Re: Tyvek hinges??
What about radio south CA hinges? Thin and can be cut to size for smaller applications.

Re: Tyvek hinges??
Cut them in half, length wise for 1/2a, I've used this type of hinge for years, also nip corner off at 45 to help with installation

I use hinges like that exclusively (not this particular brand, but ones like these). I have never had a hinge fail on me. They can be easily installed in balsa down to 2mm thick. They're tricky on 1.5mm balsa.

Try to rough Tyvek with fine sandpaper, then use CA.

I cut them in half for 1/2A, rough them up a bit before gluing and round the ends up a bit like Mark says. I use thin Flexible CA for gluing them, perfect combo. I'm pretty sure it's a Bob Smith product, Brodak has it.

Re: Tyvek hinges??
No need for flexible cyano for hinges, better with thin CA glue with Tyvek , I don't sand them just use the cyano and never had one fail ever.
Re: Tyvek hinges??
Tyvek is rather adhesive friendly. Pva like Elmers school glue sticks better than material strength even. House wrap is a different product from envelopes. The envelopes have some type of coating or something. Test before use.

So avoid the envelope, and chase a strip of house wrap?

Re: Tyvek hinges??
I did a test surface a few years back with PO tyvek and thin CA. Mine failed my pull test. I have used floppy disk mylar successfully on .010 and .020 RC planes but they have their limits on adhesion. I have had them knock loose during crashes but they have never failed in flight so far. For .049 and larger powered planes, I've resumed using cut-down standard CA hinges and thin CA again. No failures so far!
