If you think it's cold in your city....

The only thing I have and use is an engine block heater. And then cross my fingers the battery is good enough to turn over in the morning. But if it gets that cold, I try to start it every few hours though. But it was a very stiff and cold ride. Heat finally started to come out when I got to work after a 22 mile ride. This was the second/warmer of the two days. Day one my parents said they would drive me as their car was in the garage. Even then, they also plugged it in anyways. That is not common though. Ususlly get a few nights at -40, then warms up a bit during the day. Cloudy days seem to be warmer than sunny days here in the winter.

I have seat heaters in my Chevy, along with remote start to “pre-warm” the motor while I shovel a path from the door to the car. Have not seen the “steering wheel heater” symbol before now, must be a new or Canada import option?

Living somewhere that never gets much below 0º C, I was gonna ask if that -36º on your dash was C or F.  Turns out, when I looked it up, around that temp. they're about the same.  -36ºF is -37ºC, so I guess my question doesn't matter.

Our biggest problem is keeping engines cool enough, not pre-heating them.

We are fortunate in that we have a garage with in-floor heating, so the boss get to park her Jeep in there and I get the other side for my boat and motorcycle

Yes, engine heater on a timer; programmed to come on around 03:00 hrs in the morning. Then, remote start from inside the house, enter the vehicle with seat warmers, heated steering wheel, front and rear window defrosters, windshield wiper heaters and favourite music channel already turned on.

When leaving the office, remote start again so it's not that bad

Bernie, it's 36 below!!   How can that be "not that bad"?
I always wanted to visit Canada.  It will definitely be a summer trip.

You know, it's really not that bad. Sunny skies, very dry air and dressed in a real winter parka, fur-lined hat, scarf, winter boots and gloves, one can ski or snowshoe across the lake and not relly be cold.

OK, 15-20 below is ideal as the snow remains powdery, yet the temperature is really nice for being outdoors.

At least low temps take care of the mosquito problem

I like your last comment Bernie. I was going to mention that part to Rod. Cold is cold, but you do not want to visit something like the provincial parks in Manitoba in the summer. Mosquitoes will carry you away!

Well, I don't know where you shop, but I don't think I don't think any store has enough backpacks to fill! In teh city, and town here is alright, but hit the wilderness northeast from here.......

Went up to the Yukon and NWT again a couple of years ago. Try standing on the side of the road on the Dempster Highway to perform the calling of nature. Absolutely comical, an artform just by itself
