Thnaks Eric. And hopefully I will be adopting its little sister in the near future. Just gotta keep the plane up in the air for 5 minutes. So, when I do gat around to putting it up, I will be flying it like an old lady just to make sure she holds up! After the 5 minute flight, well, then I can enjoy it without anymore worries! Laughing

I should have been paying attention. Good work Chancey!

Your 5 min Granny flight probably won’t be very telling about your repair work. The real test will be when you get comfy with it and start yanking it around. I think you did a pretty good job on the repair so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Can’t wait to see or hear about it’s re-maiden!

And here today it is standing on its own feet! I just tossed the servos in place, threw an 8 oz tank in the nose along with a 5 cell NiMh battery pack just to get a feeling of the AUW. So sitting with all the afforementioned parts, it is as 6 lbs 10.5 oz. All that I require yet that would add weight is a 2.4 receiver, the throttle pushrod, 1 flap pushrod, all servo mounting hardware and horns, and fuel line. Did a quick balance and it is nose heavy by a bit, so will be able to move the battery back some I am sure, but will do that when all is finally done. As well, I will have to do a left and right balance at that time as well.

Not much else new to report, other than making the missing control rod for the flap. The original is made in one piece of steel rod threaded on both ends, and I believe 4-40 thread. So I was going to have to make a new set just so they would be and act similar. Then I got to thinking.... I have a couple old threaded inserts for ny-rods I just saw the other day, and I was hoping I had some brass tubing that would fit. I have more than enough 3/32" brass tubing, but was too small. But I had a small piece of 1/8" brass tubing that was in all honesty just perfect in length. So I fluxed teh inside of both ends and filled them with solder. When hot, I inserted one of the ny-rod inserts in each end. Did my best to have them stick out equally and match the original. So overall, I now have the flap rod constructed. I also weighed both. The original was .148 oz, and the new homemade one is .122 oz.

Hey New , If this is your first time flying RC I would HIGHLY recommend getting someone to put you on a buddy box. When I started to learn , I was trying to learn by myself . That gets expensive and time consuming. Besides , you have putt a lot of time in it to get it to look nice. Just don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made.

Post  NEW222 Thu Apr 09, 2020 3:15 pm

Thanks akjgardner for the advice and concerns. I am not new to flying RC airplanes in general, as I have been flying on and off for the past 10 years, but only on foamy airplanes 42" and under. I have never flown any nitro powered airplanes of any size. With that said, I do have a few planes ready to go this year. I am officially upset however as I was going to join my first club this year, but as of now, they are not accepting new members due to the pandemic. But yes, thank you I will be waiting for it to open up as I have already been in contact with the club and will be training with one of the head trainers on the club trainer and buddy box. WIth that said, I have been flying with my friend on occasion and he said I will have no problems at all with flying a nitro plane after seeing me fly. Although electric, I have flown many types of scratchbuilt planes ranging from trainers to a fast pusher jet, and my two favorites, a foamy 'Stick', and a delta. But yes, I do not want to learn the hard way without proper instruction. Thank you again.

I have my Top Flite Sierra 40 trainer, Sig 1/6 Clipped Wing Cub, Sturdy Birdy, the Ultra Stick here, and a Sig Kadet LT 40 I recently found online. So I will be good to go. Oh, and a Sig Kougar I picked up from my buddy that also needed some repairs.

You're going to love that Kougar!  Just make sure you put a strong 45 - 50 on it.  It has a little bit of washout built into its thick wing, meaning that the wing is twisted so the tips have a slightly shallower angle of attack so they stall a little later than the roots. It makes it a little more forgiving, especially at low airspeed.  The Kougar is a great classic pattern trainer, a real goes-where-you-point-it airplane.

The Kougar is wearing a Magnum Pro .45 with custom muffler..... Front half is from an OS FSR 40, and the rear is a small travel size mousse can with brass tip.
