Swags conrod into ball socket for the pistons and conrods we recently had made but also great for resetting. Three assemblies per minutes that include:


  • Putting piston in base
    Dipping ball of conrod in oil
    Putting conrod in piston
    Swaging (one stroke)
    Checking for proper "play"
    Checking for uniform swag
    Checking fit in cylinder


Note that the strike tool does not have a "slit" like the standard reset tool
Very few need a second "press" but that is what the turntable on bearings is for

That definitely is the best design I have seen. I really like the fact that the conrod isn’t off to one side. Also very little chance of messing up.

Master toolmaker from our small-town machine shop. Everything by hand; they have no CNC machines.

Alright, time to leave the office and sit in the spa outside, overlooking the lake with a nice glass of something. Only 5 below right now, so hair probably will not freeze from the steam.

Speaking of hair, although hairdressers have been declared non-essential, booze and weed are essential services … gotta love that lol!

Not a prank …..

They first designed 5 or 6 different tools with the slot but found that one would have to do a minimum of 8-10 presses, each with increasing pressure, so that the wall of the socket did not tear where it mated with the slot.

They finally cut a piston in half and came up with a solid tool; whereas only one press is required. A bit flatter socket radius but absolutely functional and we have shipped over 300 of the new piston production.

Hu, I though the big end would be way too large in order for that to work...

Will you be making resetting tools this way now too?

Thank you for sharing the process. Still seems like you would need a slot to get a proper setting of the
ball to socket.

Something to think about but not sure. Way too many other projects being chased after.

No slot at all required. Why would one want a slot in the first place? Ronald Valentine presses his pistons the same way.

This thread made me smile. Smile I wouldn't be surprised if L.M. Cox didn't have a similar set-up. Kudos to your machinist!

You are probably right there.
In the past I have wondered why the piston part isn't well wrapped around the conrod ball from the factory. It seems to wrap around much better after using the (slotted) reset tool. Not sure what is best though, it might be easier for oil to get in there without having the piston part fully wrapped around the conrod ball.

At some point in a few years perhaps. The reason we had 4,000 pistons made was because we have over 3,000 cylinders in stock (between Matt and us), so no point in having any made now.

Not meaning to argue but, IMO, an un-slotted version is superior.
