I just finished my last base coats of clear. Tomorrow, it will be going to color. Not certain as to what to settle on. I have or had some flat black Aero Gloss that I could use up. The landing gear isn't installed but the wheels are painted like pumpkins. She should look good. I didn't have plans for this and I just guessed. Original calls for .020 Pee Wee. This is getting a Babe Bee, I went through my Bee collection the other night and freshened up 3. I didn't get to run them yet. I did find my 3 piece piston version. Old clatter I named it, it runs pretty badly as it seems gutless. This might be the better choice. It would be great to get some flights on it this weekend but I'm not certain as of yet.

Looks good Ken. I always liked this one and had wanted to build one for a while, but am lacking a .020. I had thought about scaling this up for an .049. I have the plans for it from a local friend and fellow modeller on SH. If I remember correctly, he had his daughter paint it with craft paints and then he sprayed it with Minwax Polyurethane clear.

Can't say I've ever seen a C/L version, just Free Flight. In the FF case, a Pee Wee would be quite adequate.

Boy do I ever love that Ken! What's the wood? No wheels hand launch?

I have cherished cans of Top Flights Lustrekote gloss black and clear that would do. But if I flew it I would finish it in Krylon's satin black, brush on some detail then over coat it with matt clear. But were it mine I would leave it natural and just look at it.

Granny Esmerelda Weatherwax of Terry Pratchet's Discworld liked red on the inside, black on the out. Her broom always required "bump starting"

An r/c foamboard version would be something.

Bob, I have a gear which will be held by the engine. The witch is balsa, the broom handle dowel is birch. The elevator which makes the broom bristles is 1/16" plywood. The wheels I had I painted like pumpkins.

Yeah I missed the second line of your original post regarding the wheels. Sad

I asked about the wood because the "wing/cape" looks like luan which would be much to heavy. Eagar to see the completed model and those pumpkin wheels.

Ken, nice work, what is the actual wingspan come out to be? I think the Outerzone plan estimate of 21" is incorrect, my suspicion would be closer to 17".

I won picture of the month with my witch last year. Built fall 1972 powered with a Pee Wee 0.020. Flies ok but the witches feet tend to trip her up on landing

The scaling of the file on Outerzone is all kinds of messed up. It was scanned directly from the magazine, yet when I tried to print it using 'tile print', it used 8 sheets of paper!

The largest known dimension on the plan is the wheel dia. of 1". This measured 1-1/2", so the plan is at 150%. At that scale, the capespan of 21" would actually be 14". To get an accurate plan, it is necessary to print the Outerzone file at 67%.

Just for fun, I think I will build it from the large plan and use a Babe Bee.

My wingspan is 14 1/2". The Pee Wee while it would probably work, the tank is too small. Just not enough run time and the Babe Bee isn't going to be overpowering. It might be slightly nose heavy, I haven't checked it but the tail being all of plywood might balance things out. Hopefully the feminine parts aren't making it too nose heavy. If I need some split shot on the tail so be it. I didn't have plans, I have the magazine and I just guessed at most of it. Being a bit concerned for her foot hanging down, I used silkspan from the boot up to the dowel with multiple coats of dope which stiffened the lower section a good bit. The wheels I plan on using are Sig 1 3/8" wheels. They don't look out of place but I had them on hand. I believe the magazine did suggest 1" wheels but they look somewhat small. This is all for fun and I want to fulfill that. One thing I see nowadays is that most of my club members probably due to age are doing very little in terms of this neat stuff. I would see these kind of projects on a monthly basis. Our club founder who recently passed away made models like this. He had a flying outhouse, flying carpet, a pusher space shuttle . I also have plans which are not scale for a Santa sleigh with Rudolph which I would also like to build.

Interesting, thanks for clarifying, Ken. Suggestion by pkrankow has merit, would lend itself to 3/16" (5mm) thick poster foamboard.

Noticed in the Outerzone plan photo additional holes for the Babe Bee. Seems a mild OK Cub or earlier Wen Mac would work, would allow an external tank for lighter weight and moving CG back a little due to tank location.

Witch idea also would work for Ringmaster S-1 faces modification, so would Santa or one of his elves.

I flew the witch yesterday. It did fly. It was extremely yawed out. I tweaked the leadout guide about 1 1/2" forward as to where it was located on the plans. The vertical CG is waaaaay off. In reality, there's just too much above the broom stick. There's no tip weight on the cape. It was stated it wasn't needed and by no means is it needed. It needs inboard tip weight. The faster it goes, the more it rolls outboard. I tried to vertically bend the leadout guide to assist this. I finally got her flying upright but still yawed out more than I would've liked. Of course this is a novelty but I was hoping for some sort of maneuvering. NOPE!! not even a wing over. However, 4 of the 6 flights ended up landing upright on her wheels on grass which was pretty cool. I broke her leg off but I figured that was going to happen. This was a fun project and about a dozen r/c guys just wanted to see it fly. They were most impressed and the takeoff which were hand launches were pretty spectacular. It climbed right up with no issues. She looked great flying about 45 degrees. I was using 35' lines and no line tension issues. The Babe Bee was one of my father's he had in a box which probably hasn't run in 40+ years, W plug and all. It ran great.
