Cox Battery Project Empty Cox Battery Project

Post  FSTP Tue Apr 13, 2021 11:50 am

Here is a quick little project I threw together. I always loved the aesthetics of the cox 1 1/2 volt "Super Starting Power Battery". Since they're all so old now non of them would have a charge obviously. So I decided to make a little insert that I could place in the battery box so I can still have the old look of the original battery but still have it be useful when I take it to the field.

I started by making a small plastic try insert out of modeling styrene.

Then I got a DC to DC adjustable buck converter and calibrated it for a 1.5v output.

After that it was a simple installation of all the parts. I did add some tungsten weights to the bottom just to give it a bit more heft and stability.

Finally the finished project:

I'm sure this is a common project in the cox community but I just thought I'd share my version.

Very nice job there FDTP! If you look under the “instruction sheets” file on the LH side of this page, hi can scroll down to our creative printing of Levent Surberk’s and print out a copy of a couple of different battery packs!
Just out of curiosity how did you attach the wire connections to the styrene box? Also is there a part number for that buck/boost thingy?

Thank you! to connect th escrew terminals to the Styrene box I just used CA. You have to give the styrene and the metal tab a good sanding to give the two surfaces a nice roughness for an optimal bond. You'd be surprised how strong it ended up being. But styrene and CA work really really well together. For the little DC-DC adjustible Buck converter I used this little guy :
Buck Converter . I've used them in other projects and they work really nicely.

I didn't know about the other printable batteries, thanks!

Looks nice. You will want to add a low voltage cutoff for the lithium battery of 3V per cell. Go below 3V during discharge and the battery can be damaged.

Thanks for the nice replies. I'm not to worried about cell health with this battery. I have testers and I have several of the exact same kind of alarms Levent posted. I also don't intend to leave the lipo in the box just plugged in all the time. Its Velcro'ed in so I can easily remove it. I thought about adding an external on/off switch but I didn't want to cut into the original cox box. Its old
and nice as it is.

As for what solder I used it was/is just your run of the mill rosin core 63/37 0.8mm solder.

Now that I know about the battery graphics that are available I think a cool project would be to make a USB power bank pack that looks like a Cox battery.
