Wanted Hurricane 24 part

Post  dckrsn Fri May 14, 2021 10:12 pm

Long shot I know. A good friend, and lover of most things old, gave me an engine. Did a little search, and
learned more than I wanted to. Wound up buying a donor that shows more hope than the first one. Still
missing the part that might make her a restored runner and put her in the Smithsonian. Hey I'm 68,
and my field of amusement has broadened exponentially. This one is from the 40's, and was originally
produced as an ignition engine made in Canada
Anyway, here's the part I'm looking for. Hen's teeth I know, but I'll buy a complete mill to get that piece.
Do I seem desperate? So if you find an old Hurricane glow engine, send me a PM.
Have a great weekend,
  Bob

Crappy. I had one of those that I got somewhere years ago, but unfortunately traded it for another engine about two years ago. Was definately a neat little engine. I think mine was a .24 or such.

My buddy Dan is planning on installing his Hurricane in a all aluminum free flight plane. He was test running it two weeks ago when the crankshaft broke and came flying out. I thought that was pretty funny. he didn't share the same humor. He's a full time aircraft mechanic and noticed the other day that this particular wing bolt shared similar looks as his crankshaft. He made another crank for it using that bolt and it's once again running.

Hey, sorry for the late response. Been away from the
laptop somewhat. Eric, got your PMs. Thanks bro.
The Hurricane I'm working on, is a glow version. The ones
you usually see are the spark ignition mills. Not wanting to
get knee deep in another area of the hobby, I figured
the glow Hurricane would be the conservative route.
Anywhoo, this is the the glow version with what looks like
maybe a brass cover for the nose end of the crank, where
all the sparky stuff normally goes. That cover is actually what I'm
looking for.

Hens teeth I know, but I thought I'd throw it
out there. This is what I have now. I did get a clear plastic re-pro tank for her though.

One mans trash is another mans revival of a
'40s model engine. A month ago, I had never
even heard of the Canadian Hurricane.
Thanks for all the responses guys.

Do you know any machinists.. or have any machine-work "job-shops" nearby? Seems to me that the missing part shouldn't be difficult to replicate. It might be a press-fit extension to the existing bushing that's sticking out of the case. I assume that the inner drive-washer fits up-against the shoulder on the crank? Of course it would be ideal to find an exact replacement for authenticity. Do you have the "back-end" parts shown?

Hey Roddie, correct on how the nose hangs on
that bronze/brass shaft bushing and the prop
plate rides on the nose shoulder of the crank. The
piece I need might be able to massaged from a piece
of stock tube, albeit metric? Hello McMaster-Carr?
I have too many irons in the fire, my Space Bug,
rebuilding engines for a member, Man-Win trainer.
Wah, wah, wah, I'm loving' it! I figure the Hurricane
is at least a month down the road. "Time Is On My Side",
or at least I like to think so. Rolling Eyes
