Just a couple of thoughts of what I would do in this situation. Maybe try a light sanding with a flat bar sander with fine sandpaper, possibly a water and bleach solution applied with a spray bottle and then very well weighted down on a solid flat surface for a few days to make sure they remain straight. Possibly do the water/bleach thing first followed by the fine sanding?

Possibly oil soap lightly applied to a rag, I have used light furniture polish on old cox boxes worked great.
Just a guess but water sounds bad.

Lay 'em flat, dust with compressed air, turn over do the other side. A tack cloth if all else fails.

You aren’t going to get cigarette smoke or nicotine staining out, but dust and hair should just wipe off. Compressed air like Bob suggested will make short work of it.
