Enya Engines deal from Ken Empty Enya Engines deal from Ken

Post  sosam117 Thu Sep 01, 2022 3:13 pm

Well, I made a deal with Ken to purchase 127 engines that were in his warehouse.

Below are the engines in his warehouse ready for payment for shipping.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Enya_r14

They are a mix of anything from Enya .049 to big Enya 4 stroke engines.
He did give me a list of the engines that are in the boxes.
What this is was, Ken had an idea he had in Japan that "if" you purchased a new engine and shipped to Enya a running "old" Enya.
You would get so much off on the new engine?

Ken's idea was to refurbish the old engines that were traded in and sell them as reconditioned.
Well, the idea was good but the cost of refurbishing (time and labor) then selling the engine was not beneficial.
Ken even had on his website where you could have purchased the reconditioned engines.
The link below is still there but no engines for sale?

http://www.enya-engine.com/store156C_1/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_29&products_id=574

So, how did I get this deal?
Well, I would get an Enya on RC Groups and other places where the engine was in poor condition or missing parts.
Order the parts needed to rebuild it (refurbish), then clean and rebuild it.
I then would email Ken the completed refurbished engine and what I did to get it looking like "new".

I did that enough times to where Ken told me he had some engines in his warehouse (if I was interested) That I could purchase for a fair price, but all of them have some work that has to be done with them.
Ken gave me no guarantees about parts availability.

Anyway, I accepted and the cost and the cost per engine is around $30.00 each.
Now for the parts.
I'll have to wait to look at each engine to see what part is missing or needs replacing.
I know I'll need new gaskets (some I can make if I have to.)
Ken told me one engine (an Enya 35X T.V. -- NIB) is missing a carb --- this engine has the square intake.
And Ken said most engines do not have boxes or papers and mufflers.

The last downside was the shipping cost when Ken sent me the Paypal invoice for requesting payment.
Shipping came to almost $3200 Shocked
Well shipping has gotten higher during the pandemic.

Interesting story Mike and I envy you going through all those engines.

It took me years to accumulate that many engines and bring them up to snuff, Thanks to Bobby Brooks.

Doubt if my total investment was a quarter of your shipping costs alone.

$55.20 cost of each engine might not be too bad?
Some of the engines are highly wanted engines (prized?)

Would have like to sell them after they were reconditioned, but with the new Paypal law that started this year it is rather restrictive?

I'll let you guys know when the engines arrive after Labor Day.

Yes, but if he finds an ultra rare .36 5001, a few odd balls and some sandcasts it might be worth it.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Empty Received Enya Engines today (06/08/2022) (day/month/ year)

Post  sosam117 Tue Sep 06, 2022 11:18 am

Received "nine" of the "eleven" boxes of engines. The last two are being held up in customs?
The eleventh box is engine parts (gaskets, screws, engine boxes, etc.) from Ken Enya.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Receiv10

Went through and looked at all of the contents packing lists in the plastic sleeves on the boxes.
Took this one box first because it has a Saito engine inside?

Emptied the box out, unwrapped the engines and hurried to get the box down to the curb for trash pickup.

Enya Engines deal from Ken 1st_bo10

Also did the same with the other boxes, as the garbage truck hasn't arrived, and I had time to unpack all of the other engines.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Recycl10

Well, here is the contents of the 1st box:

Enya Engines deal from Ken Conten10

Now, what Ken Enya told me that the ones in the plastic wrap have been rebuilt (engines in the lower left on the table) but were not posted on the Enya website to be resold.
They look in very good condition, just missing the original box and paperwork and nothing is stuck?

Everything else on the table is locked up, especially the engines with the props on them.

Now last item is the FA-30 Mk.-1 engine.
It seems like it has been run because on the mounting lugs you can see screw indentations like it was screwed down.
It turns over but is a little gummed up (it turns over a little tight.)
Everything is in the box, glow plug wrench, instruction manual, decals, shim for lifter gap. extension wire for glow plug remote, tool kit.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Close_11

This might be a keeper? 1st time I've ever seen this engine.
I've seen the O.S. open rocker and the Enya open rocker engines and I do have a few of them, but not a Saito open rocker.

As for the other engines.
I took a quick look, and most are in the Enya boxes (fair and poor condition -- the boxes).
I'll have to take a little more time to go through each box and see what the problem is with each engine?

Thanks!

I looked at them all but the one that caught my eye was the little .06 in the upper left hand corner.

Year's ago I bought one sitting in the middle of a bunch of sticks. Was going to keep the engine and throw the rest of it away but kept it and put the sticks back together. Ron Cribbs identified it as a Veco Scout.

You are correct!
It is a very rare Enya .09-III Ball Bearing which Enya made for only two years before coming out with Enya .09 Quicky BB.
The "red prop driver" was a quick id to let you know it has a ball race in the front housing for the crnk.

More for the collection Shocked

I should sell some off though?

Been collecting The Enya engine for years from MRC (Altec --- first Enya I purchased there .09-III) to purchasing them from Hobby Lobby (in Tennessee) to Ed Carlson in Arizona, to A hobby shop in Singapore to last was a hobby shop (modelflight.com.au) in Australia.
And the final (I think) is this group of engines from Ken Enya?

I'll have a collection of approximately over 400 Enya engines. From the 1960 to their last production run of engines?
But I don't have them all (maybe a good thing?)

rsv1cox,
You have a nice Enya .06 Rear Induction (reed) engine on a nice looking old Veco Scout.

I emailed Ken about it and the original owner traded that Saito engine for a Enya 35-4C open rocker.
Ken said that it has been sitting in the warehouse for over 20 some years.
They only found it when they moved from their old original location (Tokyo) to the current location they are at (Saitama - suburb of Tokyo).
They were bought up by Shioya Manufacturing Company Ltd. in 2005 and the new owners moved Enya to Saitama.

So cool, thanks for sharing sosam117. I'm eager to see what you have all there.

I reciently ordered a bunch of parts from Ken to convert a 40ss to controlline and other odds and ends. Yeah shipping+fees to process duty (which is basically free compared to processing charges) was a bummer but no 3k. Really enjoye working on enyas though so totally worth it. Looks like years of awesomeness for you.

That open rocker sure is slick.

Well, I received the two final boxes that were held up in customs today.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Img_0164

The smaller box with the "fragile" tape on it had engine parts that Ken sent along. Of course, they are "used" dirty parts that can't be sold as "new", and they have not been reconditioned.

Inside the parts box was a box full of mufflers. Some somewhat new and some with sticky castor oil coating as well.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Muffle10

The 12x14 tub in the bottom right corner is all .09-III mufflers

The next photo below is another 12x14 tub of 15/19 mufflers.

Enya Engines deal from Ken 15_19_10

The mufflers varied in size from Enya .09 to one Enya 80-X muffler.
Some mufflers I took a quick look at was one 60-II, 2- 60-III, 2- 60-X, 1- 50x, some mufflers for 30/35/40 size engines.
Nine 19-X mufflers, some 15/19 size mufflers, and 13- .09-III mufflers.

There are also five O.S. mufflers in the box as well as some mufflers from a company call KNK that look to be boat mufflers?
I'm not sure how these mufflers work but water is sucked up into a hose (behind the prop to push water into a pickup) that goes to the cooling jacket on the engine, then goes to the muffler that has tubing coiled around inside the muffler to where it exits to the side of the boat?
Maybe sell those on RC Group Classified in the "boat" section?

Enya Engines deal from Ken Boat_m10

And there is one muffler from Suzuki(?) for a 19 size engine.

Enya Engines deal from Ken Suzuki10

I think I'll try to mate up some of my engines (that currently don't have mufflers) to the boxs of mufflers Ken sent me?
