help! it wont start Empty help! it wont start

today my fuel came and i tested out my engine but it didn't work all that happened
there was fuel leaking out through the crankshaft and propeller driver,
there was also bubbling on the joint between the glow head and the cylinder i took the glow head off and there was no gasket

how do i fix it?

For one, replace the missing head gasket.

Fuel running out of the crakshaft suggests a VERY tired engine that may have but parts value only.

could i get it fixed with a new crankcase

the auction info says this "A nearly new Cox 0.49 aircraft engine, this came direct from the agent in Canada, has only been run at factory and once or twice by me"

so it shouldn't me doing this

Yeah, just get a new crankcase with a crankshaft already installed. That will cost about $5.95 or so.

or you could just be attempting to run it way too rich or flooding it on prime.
that is a common mistake that first time engine users make.
just get a gasket from dens model supplies they are the official UK supplier.

then just try again you can probably get it to run.
are you still using that massive 8 by 4 prop?
that will stop it from running well.
It is normal for a bit of oil and or fuel to come out of the crankcase.

Not in a two-stroke engine which relies on crankcase pressure to induce fuel.

All too often the "unwashed" assume the very worst which is seldom the case. The vast majority of problems engines and life have simple solutions.

You got me, there. Many times I've tried to think some problem out, and then I get that Homer Simpson "DOH" moment!

I'm truly not experienced enough with the Cox engines to troubleshoot...yet. I'll get there.

Auction sounds like e-bay

Many folks on e-bay significantly exagerate the conditiion of their goods or they really do not know what they are selling and say what other ads say....odds are you got a well used small engine (if fuel is really puking from the crank at thrust bearing)

No way from your post to know what cox engine. We asume not a collectable unique one, so we think typical 049

Two supporters here on this site will sell you a complete bottom end for under $7 a real good deal...in fact they have several different configurations

They also have all the gaskets, glow plugs, and enough compete parts to build the basic 049s

Or do as I do, don't expect much from used E-bay items and buy new from these folks for not much cash at all

complete bottom end = crank case and standard crank shaft... cox international and exmodelengines both have "front end" parts for $5.95 to 9.95

I call it the bottom end in my post...sorry for any confusion

Speaking of eBay: I recently bought a Tee Dee .09 on eBay that looked almost brand new. Here is the seller's exact quote, copied from the listing:

"This is a used Cox .09 that is very clean, it is on a nice mount and ready to run."

When I got it, it was on a nylon mount. Like I said, looked almost new. It was locked up solid! Here is what the seller wrote, after I wrote to him and told him "Ready to run doesn't mean locked up".

"Most of these locked up engines will free up quickly by putting a prop on and heating the cylinder with a hairdryer, sorry you had a problem."

Huh? I get to "free up" a "ready to run" engine? Wow...

To his credit, he did totally refund my money, no questions asked, on the spot. AFTER I start the engine, I might pay him what I think my trouble is worth. The engine does look good inside and out, but once I try to start it, we'll see. I did disassemble and clean the TD, and can't tell why it was locked up. No scoring, heat damage...nothing as far as I can tell, other than old gunked up castor...which I expected. Once reassembled it turns like brand new. I can still see what I think are factory hone marks in the cylinder. BTW, I paid less than what most TD .09's are going for.

"Caveat Emptor" is right! I might have to stay away from TD's, and start getting into .049's from the Cox dealers! lol!

Only probelm is I really like TD's, and no one is selling them anywhere else, that I know of.

Sorry...just my "two cents worth" rant on used engines!

Pretty much all engines that are frozen will run again - It's just years of hardened oil that will come off easily with the right stuff. Power dissolver, WD-40, fuel, whatever. If he refunded you completely, that was some great customer service!

It was good customer service, even though the description was more than a bit misleading (to me, anyway). That's why I will do as he suggested, and pay him what I think the engine and my time is worth...once i know it runs.

Sorry I usually use my iPhone on here hence some wrong words being put I. By the autocorrect because it does not recognise names and abreviations.
Redford was what my phone changed reedies to.
Also some of my words are joined by a single letter likenthis
Because I have rather large fingers and the touch screen is über sensitive so when I miss the space bar even slightly I put a letter in by mistake.
So when my spelling or grammar is particularly bad or that a sentence doesent make sense remember I am probably on my phone.
Just tell me if you notice anything and I will be happy to try and correct it.

..... have come from ebay. I especially like buying the large lots of junk, partial engines, parts etc. I start by cleaning enough parts to build a few, than running them. My best used engines were the ones that were stuck with old castor oil. The ones that tuned & were gummed up were worn worse .....

I also buy piston/cyl. sets, gaskets, glow heads etc from the suppliers that advertize on ebay, with good results so far.

I have yet to be disapointed in my ebay purchasses, but than I dont bid very high, either.

In my expiriance, the Tee Dee engines are the hardest to get going, tune, maintain, etc. There are better NVAs from the after-market that offer better tuning. If one is new to Cox engines, there are easier ones to cut your teeth on, but the Tee Dees offer better performance.

A happy medium is the Medallion line, great for sport flying.

But the Baby Bee always takes me to that warm, fuzzy place .....
