1930's P-35 - What a neat little aircraft.

It was the forerunner of the higher performance Republic P-47. A search on Outerzone brings up 6 plans:

Although the P-51 received higher honors being used mostly for high altitude aerial combat, the P-47 did the brunt of the dirty work with their ground attacks. So sturdy was it that they returned with pieces shot out, engine missing cylinders, etc. The heritage of it was carried on with the Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II, so gloriously nicknamed, the "Warthog".

Another beautiful plane is the radial engine Curtiss P-36 Mohawk, forerunner of the P-40 Warhawk. Outerzone has 5 include a Walt Musciano design:

George, I love the P-36. I was looking around for plane to use for my Saito .45, which is a bit heavier than the later Saito .40s. I figured I'd need to do a radial design, and I always come back to the Hawk. Love the lines and the history.

I had the honor of talking to a few pilots that had flown both the P-51 and P-47 in combat. They came down evenly on which was the better plane. Best as I could tell, the pilots who preferred the Jug were the ones who'd had heavy combat damage, knowing that if they'd sustained the same damage in a Mustang they'd not be here today (then).
