Or two stage Boyesen's that I'm sure some of you motorcyling Herberts will be familiar with.

I have done that infact. I used the mylar disk from a floppy disk to cut it out of. I actually have a star shaped hole punch that I punch the little stars out and trim the points of the stars down that end up looking exactly like your reed. I have yet to really run it through some tests but I did try it in a babe bee and it did work. I'll post some pics when I get home (on my smartphone right now).

The only possible downside I can think of is it may become misshapen more quickly than the simpler shapes.
