Gents,

My new to me .049 Hornet is missing the spinner and rear tank back cover. I think MECOA has the spinner but, it looks like bare aluminum. I was wanting to put the red one on it as original. If there is another source out there please let me know.

Also if anyone can educate me on this thing I would appreciate it. It's a beautiful little engine. Not as nice as my TD's but, very handsome nonetheless. I don't have tools or a glow clip for it so I will leave it alone for now. I would like to fire this baby off at least once!

Figured as much Matt. The Holland clip works on the .049's and up so it may make sense to grab one some time. Thanks for the info

The Holland Hornet was THE 1/2A contest f/f power engine back in the day. It was the engine we all wanted, but could never afford, in my club there was one serious contest flyer who had one, and I can still remember watching (and hearing!) it performing at every contest we attended. Even now I would love to add one to my collection, but I can't justify the cost for an engine I could never fly to it's full potential.

Might be of interest, MECOA have Hornet glowheads and glowclips, a search of their site might find other bits.

Wilf,

Thanks for the info. Have to ask though, with all the engines you have how many of them are having their potential realized?

There are a couple on Ebay as we speak, most go for around $35-50. Unless they are mint examples.

If you would like me to be the shipping middle man I would be glad to help out!

Don't know, not sure what colors are from what years John. I just assumed red as that's what I have seen.

The venturi and driveplate on mine is blue anodized.

The Holland Hornet first came out in '57 with a blue spinner, no anodized venturi restrictor. Next version, Mk I model with anodised restrictor had non-anodized spinner.
'59 version Mk II red spinner some times blue with blue prop driver. 1960-'61 models sometimes had a anodized spinner, last year '63 (who's gonna run with a Tee Dee?) had no spinner different glowhead. I've got more photos on web site.

Mark,

Thank you for the info, I went to the site and checked out your pics. Still confused as to what type of spinner it should be! Very Happy

I posted up some pics of mine, let me know what you think about what I need to do. Check out the tank as it appears like it is different than any you showed me.

Congrats, nice engine! If there is no 'I' under the .049 on right side its a early version and should have a plain spinner.
I do need to spend time adding captions to all the photos

Cool thanks!

So what's up with the tank? I assume the nipple is for filling but, is that drilled hole for the hose stock?

Also what are my options for the tank backplate? I think MECOA has the spinner.

Post  Cribbs74 Sat Mar 10, 2012 8:45 am

I get it....... No parts available!

Been all over the web, seems ebay is the only viable option. I guess my Hornet will get the "shelf" treatment. Shame really, it's such a nice engine and looks to be quite useable in the modern modeling realm.

I grabbed a spinner from MECOA. Looks like the tank is from an Atwood "Shriek" it's all I got so I will make a plate for the back of the tank so I can fire it up at least once, just so I can hear it. The glow head glows bright hopefully it will last at least one run. Not sure if the filaments are as sturdy as the Cox ones.

Now I'm depressed....... Sad

I guess I should have expected as much seeing as the engine was only in production for 6 years. You would think with the popularity of these things the aftermarket would have more parts.

Mark, I appreciate all your info. You have some nice engines. Would you happen to have a copy of the instruction manual? Also any fuel recommendations?

Thanks for the help!

Ron

The spinner and drive hub on my .049 are natural aluminum.

Were there differences in color for the .051?

There was one on the British Ebay site recently that had what he called
a ' Timer Tank' an option apparently. One of the holes in tank had a tube
which could be pulled up and was presumably the outlet allowing you
to use only part of the full tank. Spinner on this one was plain
aluminum identical to that shown on parts diagram above.

Here's how the timer tank worked: Fire up the bad boy, set needle, just prior to launching your plane, you'd move the wire spring (held in place by small groove) another sping around the top of tube, inside the tank (see photos) would push the tube down sealing the top half of tank off, the bottom would be full and you'd have a premeasured, predictable run time.

Great photo's Mark!

The guy who gave me the engine showed me how one worked in person. Neat and simple design. Unfortunately it wasn't on the engine he gave me!

i'm kinda wondering if the tank you have is likely a early version. Remember early .049B Cubs and Wen-Mac would just have a hole drilled for fuel line.

I suppose it's possible. He gave me the engine and asked if I wanted it for free flight or CL. I said free flight, so he rummaged in his parts box and handed me that tank. So I doubt it came with that engine.

It is identical to an Atwood "shriek" tank.
