I may take one of the new crankshafts over to the machine shop next door to see if they can match the bearing relief. Either that or find 2 old cranks, one for this engine and one for Jeremy's late Uncle Chris's engine as it was broke when I got it.

What makes you think the crank is the culprit?

Does the case burn you when you touch it? How well does the crank spin when it's in the case by itself

I'm not there with you so I can't see what you are seeing. I guess what I am saying is even though it has more bearing surface it either fits or it doesn't. If it spins free then it wouldn't be a large source of friction. If it is the wrong diameter or bent then sure I could see that being an issue.

It fits and spins just fine. Yes it was hot to the touch, nearly as hot as the head. I don't think it's getting the cooling internally it needs to run properly, hence the larger relief.

Travis,

Man this is frustrating.....wish I had teleporter like in Star Trek. lol!

Anyway if it spins free I don't see it being a problem. What you are probably feeling is heat radiated to the case from the cylinder.

Does your piston go through the cylinder easily now? It should either fall through or at least push through with very light pressure. If not then that needs to be corrected.

Last night I was cleaning up a pee wee and I noticed the piston crown was hanging up really bad just at the top of the exhaust port. I took some very fine steel wool and cleaned all the yellow varnish out of the cylinder and cleaned everything afterwards. I then polished and oiled the piston and it slid right through the cylinder and landed on the floor!

Something to check anyway. You may have a warped cylinder and devarnishing won't fix that.

YO Travis,

I knocked this one out of a spare front end I had, and it looks to match the one on the left in your photo. I'll pack it and the rest of the junk along tomorrow.

I can also bring you some fresh SIG 25% and 35% to muddy the waters even more !!!

Have you cleaned out the groove that carries oil down the length of the crank? I got a nice looking used Black Widow the other day and the groove was so gummed that it would have scorched the crankshaft if I had run it without checking. I had to use a dentist's pick and brake parts cleaner to clear it out.

A semi plugged needle orifice will choke your motor, kinda like what you are describing,,if I read all that correct.

I'll play with it tonight to see what it does. I've spent way too much time on this little engine to give up now Wink

As for now, starting cold seems to run fine. The the longer it runs, through the initial tank, the more doggy it gets (like with a throttle ring on idle). It will eventually die and when you try to start it, it may run only for a few seconds. It will get to the point that it don't want to start except with a shot of prime. Let it cool down and your back to square one. That's why I think the shafts are causing it to overheat and not run. The head is too hot to touch and the case is almost to that point. I've tried the tank from my good one and it does the same thing.

I'll take a look at the case also when I have it apart to see if there is something clogged there.

Have you checked the actual thrust bearing surface? I'm talking about the part in the crankcase that the front part of the crank disk pushes against as the engine runs.

Are you making a bunch of aluminum "mud" on the snout from the drive washer??. Could be a really close drive washer when pulled on.

Once everything expands from a touch of heat, it takes it out of tolerance possibly.

Ouch!

What happened? The head must have been on really tight. Sorry to hear that. Good thing is Cylinders do pop up on Ebay now and then. See if Joe has one for ya.

Give that piston/cylinder set I left a shot. You're welcome to it if it works ! Apparently gonna have to tear down the .020 in my Mini Stunt. I'd hoped I'd luck out and just have it crank up and run, but it's not steady, needle setting is all over the place. Time for a de-gooping !!!! The Pee Wees are NOT being friendly this month !!!!

The #3 engine isn't the same cylinder I'm messing with, should be fine. I still need to get it in the mail and off to you.
