Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
I love mine. I built it last spring.
This one has the Brodak plastic motor mount. I highly recommend finding the plans for the old style nose and build it with that. The new type is a weak spot that can snap off too easily.

How lucky are we...that a flat box of cookie-cut wood, sheets of paper and wire scraps can make our day ???!!!!!!

Speaking of the plastic motor mount does anyone know where to find one? There is supposed to be one on my 'lil wizard held on by rubber bands. I did have it years ago, now it's lost forever........

It's the simple things Kim. My kids are more entertained by chickens, dirt and rocks then the latest toy.

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
Now I'm trying to decide on a power plant. Been years since I have flown 1/2 A and the dizzy factor may be an issue in my older years. I was thinking Tee Dee with one of those Cox beam mount tank combo or maybe go old school with a reed engine. You mentioned the Brodac mount issue. I guess I can reinforce it a bit.
Ron check with Brodak for a mount.

Black Widow... Great motor for this plane!! I have a vintage kit NIB from the early 70's if you want... the originak kit came with a clear canopy, rear tail wheel, balsa pilot cut out, solid wood engine mount...there is a difference from the old Carl Golberg Kit and the Brodak kit...I like the old kit alot more. Have Fun..This plane is a great flyer...Rusty has some videos on You Tube you should check out.

My son and I built this Lil Jumpin" Bean over twenty years ago. It has never been flown. It was recently discovered in the garage under a layer of dust and spider poop, along with my other old planes. It cleaned up pretty well. Got all my engines in good shape with help from this forum. Hope to be flying again soon

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
It flies great with a Black Widow as far as power and balance. But I keep running out of gas before I'm through having fun, so if I had it to do over, I would break tradition and beam mount a Medallion on it. Since this is such a simple and great fun-flyer, I say Medallion because it draws fuel easier and is less fuss than a Tee Dee... keeping it simple. I've never seen a picture of a beam mounted Bean, but the kit has the option of either mount.
Here are the pictures of the doublers I added to mine after rebuilding the broken nose:

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
Mine are on top of the wingtip just like that, sitting in a carved out cradle. Either way would work, but it's a little stronger on top of the tip.ZACATTACK wrote:

What do you all use for lead outs from the bellcrank?

I use fishing lead wire (That's "LEED" not "LED"!) I think in the fishing community it's called "Trace" wire, comes in various breaking strains, I use the strongest I can find!

I don't like leadouts under the tip, just personal preference.

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
The Brodak kits come with braided steel leadout wire. It has a smooth feel to it like it's coated with plastic but I'm not sure if it is. It works fine with the copper crimping tubes supplied. I always cover the crimps with shrink tube.

The fishing wire I use is also nylon coated, as you say it works OK with crimps, but if you want to solder it (I always do) you have to strip the covering off the bit you want to solder first, a sharp blade will do it

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
Does the Brodak Bean have the original rounded nose or is it beam only? I also see they are out of stock

Re: Li'l Jumpin Bean
It comes ready for beam, but also has the plastic radial mount and instructions for building it either way. Note my comments above on the weakness of the nose with the plastic mount, and my modifications after it broke.cribbs74 wrote:Does the Brodak Bean have the original rounded nose or is it beam only?
