Well, OK then !!!
The only reason it's not getting it's break-in right now is that I got to go get an "Old-Guy" check-up about my sissy shoulder!
They tolerated my disassembly of engines in the waiting room last month, but I somehow figure that a screaming RACING ENGINE just MIGHT be pushing it a bit too far...
Also, you should be getting your 5-40 hardware today or tomorrow!

Can you run it with only 2 shims and a Cox 5x3 black prop - just for the fun of it?

Its possible that it is still over compressed with just 3 head shims. Maybe got to 5 and see what it does.

Hey Bernie...I'm thinking it may still need some run time. It went up over 18 then surged a bit back and forth. I was losing my light, and so used a flashlight to run the tach, which tended to register all over the place. I'll try it again in daylight tomorrow!

Re: Introducing the new Cox International "Xtreme" engine
OK...HERE we go!
I packed 5 head gaskets into Ole #13, which brought it's average RPM to a pretty steady 17000. I then ran a couple tanks each as I progressively removed gaskets until I got it down to one.
With one gasket, on 25% Sig, it surge back and forth across 19000. I also thought to balance the 5-3 prop...it was a bit out...and this may have helped also.
As usual, I'm pressed for time with other things, and will have to get back to it to see if more run time helps. May also squirt some 35% in the wild dog to see what happens.
Methinks I'm fixing to void my warranty!!!!!!

Re: Introducing the new Cox International "Xtreme" engine
Kim,
Why not try taking an APC 5.7 X 3 and cutting it down to 5". I bet that little engine picks up at least 1500 RPM. The fast turners don't like that wide heavy prop.
No matter what RPM it makes it looks fast doing it.
Bob

I'll see if I've got one in my inventory (I keep the APC's locked in a cage to prevent them from bullying the other props), and give it a shot. I think the Cox 5-3's DO give an across-the-board RPM comparison of these little engines though.
I'm going to start another thread though, sorry I got carried away and hijacked Bernie's post....
