I actually have the plans for all of the Bee kits. Or almost all of them. I was building the yard bee but stopped because I was very disappointed as to how it turned out.

I didn't have any experience bulding balsa airplanes, so I mounted a Black Widow on a small 270 - 300 size(?) foam parkflier. That was an adventure. After coming home with a loose cowl, bent prop, folded wing and other things, I slowed down and started thinking. I've since added RC Throttle and a muffler. Working on wing struts and 2.4ghz.

So that's something to consider, you'd just need to add a bit of Epoxy around the engine area to keep to foam healthy.

Hope I haven't Hijacked. Shocked

There is a Youtube of a fella who mounted a .049 on a Tyco AirHog F-18,,it made about a 30-40 second flight before it dug a hole.

Been looking but not seeing it, searched last night and this morning. It was extremely nose heavy and made about a 1/2 circut around the field and then dug in.

There is a short kit available. I will try to find a web site or email address this weekend. Plans are also available.

I wish there were more Sportavia's around or at least plans for it.

I never owned one. When they first came out I never bought one but now regret it. It would be a perfect mix of gliding and Cox power I would think.

Hi mate. Just thought you might like to take a look at the 'House of Balsa' Ibis - its a relatively tame rubber flyer with a 23.5" wingspan and should be easily up to the task of making into an RC Cox powered model. I am in the process of doing so at the moment, but have lengthened wings and removed dihedral.

Cheers - boingk

What engine are you going to use?
a 23.4" rubber model is a little too light and small for a tee dee .049

Holy Cow!! I actually have the Sportavia. That plane was given to me and we had no clue what it was or what it flew with. It is mainly foam and looks exactly like that plane. A little more oil, but generally the same.

The Cox Sportavia is a wonderful airplane. Our little group of flyers went through bunch of them in the 1980's, and literally wore them out from flying them so much. I remember that they were expensive, compared to other RTF's, but were beautifully finished . They could be launched from a very small area, circled up above the trees, and then spiraled back down for landing.

I modified the wing center section on mine, wrapping the root with fiberglass and embedding a wheel collar to capture the heavy wire/wing connector. This allowed me to break down the wing for transport, and turned the Sport into a nice, portable package.

Using a buddy-box set-up, I taught a lot of students to fly with the Sportavia...all the way up through solo landings. The only part I disliked was the stick-on decal sheet. Especially behind the engine, the decals tended to wrinkle and peel loose, but still stuck tightly enough that it messed up the foam's finish if you tried to remove them completely. I finished mine with a simple stripe of foam-friendlly paint. Also, the whole engine area and below needed a coat of urethane to protect it from the fuel.

I heartily agree with Jetpack...this is another one that I miss badly and wish someone could manufacture. With Bernie and Matt's .049 throttle assemblies, you could add a third servo, and make some beautiful slow passed on calm evenings!

I'm sure you could make a new one from balsa if you have drawings of it.
or of foam if you like.

Godsey,

I found two sources for a Q-Tee. Aerosphereonline.com offers a kit. I do not know anything about aerosphereonline.com (or if they are still in business) so I can't help you there. Lazer-works.com offers a laser cut short kit. This means you need to supply your own plans and instructions. The plans are available from one of the bigger magazine plan sources. Lazer-works.com might even say where to get the plans.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Plans are available from rcmplans.com. On page three of this thread nitroplane posted a super link to an RCG thread that included the directions for the Q-Tee. With a one ounce tank it is a lot of fun. With a throttle it is an absolute blast. I bet it would be even more fun with no dihedral, a throttle and ailerons.

Good luck,

I can attest to the quality of the "Q-Tee" short kit from Lazer-works http://lazer-works.com/list.html . The only mystery to building the plane is the rib spacing, which I measured from my Uncle's plane.

I can get those numbers to anyone who'd like to build one.

Yes. It was modified with an 8 ounce tank for long distance flying...a fund raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

We lost the plane when it's wing failed in rough air over the Mississippi River, but still managed to raise around $1400 dollars for the hospital. I've got a second kit that will be built pretty much to standard plans.

Here is a photo of my Uncle Wayne's un-modified Q-Tee:

The first Q Tee,s was kit pilot model year 1980 approximately.
There were two models.
The first Q Tee was for 0.49-0.61 engine and second model had name Micro Star for 0.20-0.30 engine.
I have all original drawings on paper.
I have an old model for a 0.49 engine under reconstruction.
