anyone feel like donating your old dead cox glow plugs?

I am trying to get things sorted for my 9 cylinder radial build, in an effort to keep costs down I am hoping the membership would be willing to donate their dead cox glow plugs, I hope to be able to modify them to take standard plugs. never tried this before so not sure how well it will work.

Canadian's would be a bonus just to keep shipping down, US should be good also.

with that said, if anyone also has a dead cylinder they are willing to part with, I need to make a jig to drill out the heads.

let me know if I am out of my mind asking this.

kind regards.

John, not the first but surely the second. a good friend of mine made the 9 but he hasnt fired it up. after he saw my interest in the cox twin he sent me his drawings so I can make one and fire it up Smile I gladly accepted. if it has good power I would like to fly it also RC Plane

my friend in New Zealand responded and will send me a write-up for modifying glow heads to glow plugs in the next few days. i will forward to you and post here.

edited 10-19-12 10:22p.m. PST - added text for cox glow head conversion.

Mod. your old heads for separate Glowplugs.
Stuff required:- Lathe with 3 jaw CC chuck
Tailstock drillchuck
7/32" drillbit.
23/64" drillbit ground square OR a 23/64" Endmill
1/4" x 32tpi Tap (for glow plug)
Dial Indicator, and/or a dial or digital vernier
small vice, Hammer, and 3/32" Pinpunch

1. Sit the Cox 0.049 cyl. head upside down on the open vice jaws and gently tap the old glow-element out with the 3/32" Pinpunch.
2. Put an old 049 cylinder, with parallel sides, in the lathe chuck, then screw the cyl. head into the cyl., finger tight.
3. With a 7/32" drill in the tailstock, drill right through the Head. Now face off the Head. Not a lot, just a skim.
4. Take the head off, (remove glow head from cylinder), and measure with a depth gauge, the distance from the top of the head, to the edge of the combustion chamber and the 7/32" hole. NOTE measure EACH head; they vary more than can be seen with 'the naked eye!'
For Example, we'll say our first measurement is 0.3325". Now ,with the depth gauge, measure from the copper washer to the end of the thread on one of your Glowplugs. for our example , we'll say that is 0.1845". Subtract 0.1845" from 0.3325" equals 0.1480", the depth we need to counterbore the head.
5. Put the head back on the cyl. in the lathe, and with the Endmill OR the SQUARE-ENDED 23/64" drill in the tailstock chuck, bring the tailstock up untill the drill just touches the head and clamp the tailstock.
6. Set the dial indicator up at the face of the tailstock chuck and zero it.
7. Drill into the head 0.1480".
8. Now put the 1/4" x 32 tpi tap in the tailstock, and turning the HEADSTOCK chuck BY HAND, while pushing the tailstock with your other hand, thread the head for the glow plug.
wasn't that easy?

Much cheaper than buying new heads with integral glow elements, isn't it?

My thanks to George Tattersall in New Zealand.

Please comment and ask questions.

Hey Mike,

As you read this, coursing your way through our glorious postal system, are some 9 or so Cox glowheads of various and dubious quality. Sharing their company, is an .049 cylinder that harkens back to the days of my youth. Actually, I ain't got a clue about its age...it was just laying in the cigar box with my other battered War Veterans.

Hope they can help you with your project!

Instead of converting them to take regular 1/4" glow plugs, convert them to take Turbo plugs. You do it with a #3 Phillips screwdriver bit (to cut the hole and 60 degree taper seat at the bottom) and IIRC, a M8x0.75 tap for the threads. Turbo plugs can be had on ebay (mainly for cars), I've seen them for as little as $3 each. A year or so ago Tower had a bunch on clearance, I picked up 40 or 50 of them. There are instructions somewhere on the RC BBSs - I'll go look for the link.

You could also convert them to take a Nelson plug (these are $4.75 each), but you need more exotic tooling (which Henry Nelson can supply).
