Patrick's Medallion .15 Powered Sig "Buster"

Kim, that looks great. Nice job on the paint. I always wanted to do one of these. One of our club members built one over the summer and did it in a electric. He was going for all out speed. Unfortunately, it torqued rolled into the circle broke the mount on the motor. Luckily, no damage to the motor as the wiring harness unplugged. All in all, you guys did a great job. Ken

Does his have the wrist pin or ball socket piston?

Hey Jason,

Don't know for sure what type it is, but think it's a ball and socket set-up. We have had it on my stand for some pretty long runs, and I think he has had it since the 1990's. I'll find out the next time we fly it. Yeah, I'm hoping it hangs in there, he's running on a pretty tight budget, and a failure will shut him down for a while.

Thanks Ken! Yeah, he's pretty proud of it, and I'm REALLY glad we got the thing test-flown without too many hitches. We had a perfectly dead-calm, cool evening, though we got a late start.

He's pretty funny in that, he "wants all speed he can get" but when the time comes to fly, loses some of his nerve and says, "I better run it a little rich on this first flight so it'll fly slower." I then jump his case saying, "See that tiny wing?! You BETTER lean it out so it can actually fly, and not come chasing you across the circle!" We argue a lot.

He's now wanting to build the Buster's sibling Shoestring model, and put his Fox BB .15 on it...which, he assures me, will fly REALLY fast !!! There WILL be video...

He also flew (and smacked) his Black Widow-powered Sig Skyray. As I may have mentioned before, he's somewhat obsessed with flying on super-long lines, and our calm evening gave him a chance to try out the 50 foot spiderwire set I made up for him. The BW pulled the Skyray along quite well, and he immediately took it up high in the circle, doing his new maneuver, "The Loop", with the top of it hitting the vertical line. I've given up trying to get him to practice flying stunt with a base line of ten feet or so.



On the second or third loop though, the BW quit at the top, and he lost his line tension pretty quickly. The Skyray went vertical, rolling straight into the concrete. Except for the wing, which I'd spliced from some earlier trauma, the plane just re-kitted it's self, knocking the components apart at their glue seams. The BW was OK...so, a little CA, another wing splice, and he ought to be back in the air again.

I'm crunching down some video of the day. I had the camera running when he crashed the Skyray, but the thing only has an LCD screen for a view finder, and it's hard to see outdoors, so I missed the actual impact. I'm going to buy a more serious camera before too long, and it will have a proper eye-piece view finder!
