Questions about reed valves and retainers
All of my 049's have the star-shaped copper reeds with the e-style clip retainer.
Through reading on this site (and others), many say the mylar oval reeds are better as they don't suffer from 'float' at higher rpm's like the star reeds.
BUT.... they are intended to be used with the newer plastic reed retainers.
My questions are....
1. Can the mylar oval reeds be used with the e-clips at all, or do they suffer, performance- or durablilty-wise, in this configuration?
2. If they need the plastic reed retainer, can the old e-clip engines accomodate the plastic retainers?
Thanks for the expertise!

Reed Types.
1. The mylar reed type was not just intended for the nylon cap type of reed retainer. They were intended for all types of installations & will work just fine with the clip type of retainer...
2. Not sure I understand your question... No, the nylon cap type reed retainer needs a different shape of tank (in the area of the reed) & will not fit on the type of tank that uses the clip. A side by side comparison will make this quite obvious.
Cheers, Paul

Re: Questions about reed valves and retainers
1 I run oblong mylar (and brass, and Teflon) reeds with the wire G clip reed retainer without any problems.
2 you can buy the parts for switching through Bernie ( Coxengines.ca ) or Matt ( exmodelengines.com ) but I would just run with the system the engine has unless it is damaged and needs replacement.

Re: Questions about reed valves and retainers
Thanks, guys. I had a feeling that the plastic cap-style reed retainer wouldn't work on clip style engines, but I couldn't be sure since I don't have one to cross-compare.
It's also good to know that when my older copper reeds do finally wear out, I won't have a problem replacing them with the oval mylars.
