Chris-Craft building report

My renewed interest in the Dumas "Barrel-back" speedboat comes over three years of sitting unfinished.

Currently I'm sanding away the Pacer "Z-poxy" finish that I applied to some of the interior mahogany pieces which MUST be installed prior applying the mahogany planking to the hull and deck. Actually I'm fortunate that these pieces could be considered an "experiment" with Z-poxy to which I say Thumbs Down

In it's place I going to apply Lutrekote semi-gloss clear again to small oieces to determine it's suitabilty. If this works for me I'll finish the enter boat with Lustrekote with is actually a durable lacquer finish.

Yes I plan to run this boat but only in fresh water.

Dave, I'm looking forward to seeing it. I come from a nautical family of boats, builders and sailors, and a couple of notable sailing models have been passed down from my grandfather to my cousins. I'll be interested in seeing your project, finished or otherwise. I built many battleships as a kid, but all plastic.

Since I have a lot of $$$$$ invested in the Chris and since I have the available time I might as well "get 'er done" besides I have all the needed componets: 2.4 gig radio, servos, ESC, all running hardware, Dumas 6V electric motor AND, most importantly, the illustrated Dumas instruction materials.

I've heard that trimming and balancing a boat to plane out and run straight is at least as touchy as trimming an airplane, if not harder. I don't have any experience with model boats except from my plastic battleships in the bathtub, and they usually floated upside down better than upright. Some had a ballast keel that could be filled with BB shot. That worked, nut not very realistic for display.

Realize that the Chris that I'm constructing features a double-hull the inner of ABS plastic and the outer of mahogany strips.

Once the ABS is applied BONDO (yes) us used to fill-in any voids before the maghogany strips are laid on.

Sound easy? Don't kid yourself! Laughing
