Hardened vintage tires

Hardened vintage tires
Anyone have a tip for fitting new old stock tires that have stiffened from age, over Prop Rod hubs? The fronts weren't too difficult because of the low profile but the rear knobbies are a bear. Heat, and lots of it, might be the only answer but I don't want to damage them.

I boiled mine in water. I didn't let them sit on the bottom of the saucepan. I put them in a small Pyrex custard like container in the pot. I boiled them for about 7 minutes. It took the crooked set out of them and made them more pliable. Ken
