looks like a Fox .049. Not extremely rare. They work well until the crank breaks or the rod launches through the piston. They needle like a big engine which is actually surprising. I never used the tank you show as all of mine were tankless. The plugs are hard to find and typical Fox quality. Very hit or miss with them and they go out like someone turned off the switch. We had great success drilling out the post and tapping for a standard long plug. They do like the nitro and a good one can hang with a TD. The question is for how long. Some of these can turn out some impressive numbers. The .07 shares most of the same parts and looks similar.

Definitely a Fox. Could be an .049 or an .07 and I doubt that it's the FIA model, though a more knowledgeable person could prove me wrong. I think the FIA model mainly differed in the porting and other internal features rather than external appearance. If it has a shiny ground-off patch on one side of the crankcase below the exhaust then it's a Comet model. The angled intake tells me that may be the case. Fox Comet engines were produced for Comet RTF aircraft. When the relationship with Comet failed (OK Cub got the contract), Fox had a heap of left-over engines with the Comet logo which he ground off, removed a lug under the front of the case and angled the intake, just to alter the appearance enough for people to believe it was a different engine.

I just went over it with a magnifying glass and light no flat 's under the ehx. or # to be found ,, the only flat is between the carb. and cly were its bridged for support , They sure didn't clean up the mold seam at all . What is FIA ? any who . And the Salsa Is alright but could bee Hotter DAMMIT! Laughing Eric PS; maybe at the end of production where it was about over for the CO. , Friday engine ?

The FAI version came out in 64 I believe. This was a special contest designed engine. While it looked the same, it was very different recognizeable by the angled exhaust ports. This closed the exhaust timing earlier and also upped the compression a bit more. FAI Fox .049 engines usually have a matte sand finish case which looks to be bead blasted. Ken

The FAI has angled exhaust ports. Hard to tell from the picture, but it appears to be a standard .049.

Still a good engine though, they make brass inserts so it will accept a Cox head.

Edit: Dang it!! That's twice today Ken... lol!

One thing for sure it has internal probs. you can turn the crank 1/3 turn before it moves the piston // piston has a dome ? tit top to it hope you can see it   What engine is this Please  Wp_20127 yes that's the best my phone will do >

It is a regular Fox 049 NOT an FAI. Besides the angled exhausts, the FAI has a larger crankshaft. All the Fox 049s have the dome on top of the piston. Its actually the head of a rivet that holds the conrod socket in place. The prop drivers on these are very sloppy. Do you have the play with a prop tightened down?

not a prop but removed the sc. and nut that was on it and grabbed it by the bare shaft still a lot of slop / rivet Huh... that's something else there that it still looks that good .

Besides the angled exhaust ports, an easy way to tell the FAI version is the 8-32 prop nut on a threaded crankshaft, also used on the .07. The standard Fox .049 used a 4-40 prop screw. The FAI also had a bit bigger venturi inside diameter.

The the threaded crank replaced the prop screw in '62-'63, on all versions.

Right you are, Mark. I have an .049 with the threaded crank. It has the 'rib' fins on the side of the case.
