Got out this weekend to runs some engines. This 1955 Anderson .049 "Spitzy" cranked out a little over 10k on it's 5-3 black soft prop. I was taking it pretty easy on the engine, may try to peak it a bit higher on it's next run.

Hi Kim,

I've always liked that engine, all the Andersons' for that matter. The Spitzy came out in 1950 and I think was repaced by the Royal Spitfire by 1953, do have info that states otherwise?

So you gonna enter it in the tach race?

I think i heard about them coming out before 1950 somewhere.
Do they take a special glow head?
Or is that a standard plug.

The only reference I've got for it is my Tim Dannels book. He has two entries...pages 6 & 7, and looking at it, mine does appear to be the 1950 version with the short tank, but there's a reference to a screwed-on back cover, where mine has the pressed-in cover of the 1955 model. Actually...looking at it now, the rear cover MAY be the screw-in type...but I'm not gonna try to find out!

It came without a glowplug, so I just tried a bar-less short plug, which is what is shown.

Nope...probably won't run it in the Tach Race, but WILL fly it if I ever get the "Q-Tee" going!

lol it seems every 1/2a engine you get goes in a Q tee.

Well, they WOULD...if I'd ever get the thing airworthy! Been building German Fighters and running engines ! GOT TO FOCUS !

May be a bit too quick with a tee dee .020 as a i know someone made a tee dee .020 powered guillows cub and it self destructed in flight.So you may want to reinforce it.

Good engines and prices are where you find them. I've seen NIB (new in box) Cox engines go in a garge sale for for buck. E-bay bidding requires skills that you might acquire before tying it. (see the E-bay guide to bidding).

The first thing that you must gain is a solid knowledge of Cox engine and their many sizes and variations; reed valves vs rotary valves etc. Hang with the forum, read it carefully and take from it what we have to offer. Ask question and we'll glady answer.

Tell us of any experience that you might have in model aviation or whether you are rank beginner. Are you interested in control-line flying or radio-control flying? Do you prefer trainers or scale models?

If you would post an introduction it would be of great assistance in aiding you. Go to to the Indroductions thread and read the ones posted if you'd like examples. You might even read mine!

Jump into this hobby "cold" an you are bound to be disappointed.

I think the most "Vintage-Looking" but practical and somewhat cheap engines are the Wen Macs. They are still fairly plentiful and can run good enough to pull a sport plane around the sky.

i have a old wen kac .049 mkxi engine but it dosnt seem to have much compression, do you know of where i can get some nib parts for these engines

The Mk. XI came out about 1963, if it need a lot of parts it might be cheaper to just get some thinner and a toothbrush, clean it up and put on display. You might try to fire it up first, sometimes those old engines might suprise you. Those 'Hot Shot' engines (Wen-Mac name) were actually good engines, but glowheads are hard to come by.
