Boy you can tell when a thread really resonates with the crowd! Two pages of posts in a half of a day. I'd proudly post that on the door to my shop.

S.A.D Open for Membership - Page 2 Empty S.A.D. by Proxy: The Last Ride of Kevin Eugene's Kadet

Date: September 1977

Mission: Helping Kevin fly his Sig Kadet Mark I cross-country from the back of a pick-up truck.

Location: Olmsted Ball Park...the Site of MANY previous Control Line Adventures.

Narration: This is paraphrased and may not reflect accurate quotes.

Me: "OK, she's fueled. What say we park her on homeplate so you can make your takeoff run down the first base line, hang into a left turning climb, and spiral her up and out of here to avoid yonder light wires ?!"

Kevin Eugene: "NO WAY MAN !!! I've got a Fox 20-something up front! We're going straight out from homeplate, past the pitcher's mound, into a high-performance climb, then UP and OVER those wires !"

Me: "Come on! If you're going straight out, why not keep it low, go UNDER the wires, and climb on out on the other side."

Kevin Eugene: "Hey, I've been flying a lot longer than you, so just keep quiet and take my picture!"

With me holding the Kadet's rudder, and aiming the plane just to the left of the pitcher's mound, the Fox 20-something's rumbling idle burst into the full-throated roar that scatters ducks and dogs.

"LET'R GO!" Commanded my highly experience pilot friend.

Free of it's human anchor, the Kadet bounded across the infield...trailing a very impressive roster-tail of dirt in it's wake.

With a hard rotation into a steep climb, the Kadet launched into the sky and climbed...then mushed somewhat...then leveled...then mushed again as it approached the wires which now seemed much higher than before.

Not to be intimidated, my courageous buddy held his ground, determined not to be outdone by the specter rising before his balsawood pride and joy.

At the last second though, Kevin decided that the better part of Valor MIGHT be a bit of discretion, and cranked in hard right rudder.

Unfortunately, the powerline, unimpressed with this show of aeronautical bravery, sawed into the Kadet's wing as far as the spar, then ripped it from it's fuselage, claiming the carefully Monokoted structure for it's own.

The Kadet's fuselage gained a slightly upward hook when it lost it's wing, and headed for the tennis court where several players had stopped to watch the aerial drama.

Luckily, the Kadet's fuselage, engine still at take-off power, smacked into the ground just short of the tennis court, and destroyed it'self to an extent we'd never before witnessed. As we walked toward the wreckage, a puff of smoke from the debris field set us running. Seems the Nicad battery pack had been ruptured, and was preparing to give the balsa wreckage a Viking Funeral.

Amazingly, Kevin, known for his fiery temper, didn't stomp the batteries further into the ground, or feed them more balsa, but calmly pulled the pack aside, and even agreed to pose for a post-flight photo with the two least destroyed pieces of the fuselage.

Using a borrowed tennis ball, we eventually retrieved Kevin's wing from the wire, and he used it to build his own version of a Stand-Off-Scale Bonanza.

Thus, the Kadet, at least in partial form, DID fly again!

Possibly, but having been on BOTH ends of that stick...I've found it best to stay somewhat discreet with my opinions ! Comeuppance can be painful!

Well, I think he WAS cool for a long time..."Thriller" is STILL cool...then things got weird. I STILL think something happened to him as a little boy...but of course, tons of money and crazy fame has messed up a lot of people also.

They should give me his remainin money and I would gladly could put that to a test lol! Small would no longer be such a "small in size" event......I could buy lots of airline tickets and so on and so on , the # of entries and spectators would probably tripple Huh...

I agree that "something" happened to him as a little boy, and if Urban Legend can be occasionally believed, I think we have a fair idea of what it was!

In my opinion...High-Wing, Thick-Airfoiled, Super-Stable, Trainers are some of the most underrated R/C planes. Guys learn to fly, then dump them at swap meets.

So, I caught a lot of crap from my flying buddies when I purpose-built ANOTHER Sig Mark I Kadet with a buddybox radio system to teach people to fly.
